How necessary is the X1 handgrip, really?

Depending upon where one lives, they do have some distributors available by phone.

I don't have one, but am tempted. The company has gotten very good reviews here for their customer service, which is a huge plus in my book.

It's completely unnecessary. Some people just need another $125 to grip in their hand.

Woooshhhh!

There goes another sweeping generalisation. Are everyone's hands identical to yours? No.

Some like grips, some need grips, some don't. You are not right and they are not wrong. I would encourage anyone to try, to see what works for them, rather than listen to bigoted ignorance.

Bill

I understand your conundrum. I had the same internal conflict a couple of weeks ago... I decided against the grip and thumbs up...

i just love the lines of the camera as is... to keep the lines- i changed the way I carried the camera and way I shoot.. (some may call me stupid/stubborn/- for many reasons)

i now use the leica strap and when i am not shooting i put it in this Amazon.com: Lowepro Rezo 50 Camera Bag: Camera & Photo

has space for a spare battery and cards and it don't look like i am carrying a leica so i feel a bit safer.... (oh it also has a belt loop)

When you said useful how so? How often do you use it? thanks.

My handgrip is a constant fixture on my camera, except, of course, when I am changing the battery.

Tha camera is much easier to arange and grip in my hands, especially my right hand, and especially when I want to use a vertical format. When using vertical format, the improved grip is apparent whether I use it with the grip area on top or the grip area on the bottom (preferred, for me).

You're assuming I have hands. Perhaps I only have hooks due to an unfortunate shoot with Great Whites off the coast of South Africa ...

The poster asked if the handgrip was "necessary." It is not. Nor is the viewfinder. Nor are all the bags, wrist straps, filter adapters, etc.

This forum is far too enthralled with accessorizing, critisizing build quality and postulating as to what other cameras they should buy instead of the X1.

Go shoot some photos, people. It's not like the camera WON'T function without a handgrip. If you find that after carrying it around for a couple weeks, it's really uncomfortable, order the handgrip.

And my apologies. I'm having a really grouchy day. I spent the morning removing nose hair in photoshop.

But stop stressing over the accessories and go shoot some photos. It's a totally personal experience and what you do or do not need will be revealed.

Quick question - will this nice little handy bag fit the camera with the viewfinder attached?** Oops, I see Jan answered - that's great to know! Right now I use a large lens pouch which is a bit too snug and not very handy. Thank you both for mentioning this case!

By the way, I prefer the Leica strap as well. As it's been mentioned, we all seem to find our own ways of handling the camera for our own shooting needs.
