M9 Non-functional

After months of flawless use, my M9 has decided to refuse to run. Upon powering up the red LED stays on for about a minute then goes off. Other than that, the camera is non-functional - no menu, no buttons work, just a bright red LED eye staring back at me in disdain.... any thoughts. BTW tried to get hold of Leica tech support in NJ. One of two techs was out to lunch, the other in the phone, so I left a msg. No call back yet.

Just to check, have you tried the usual do-it-yourself fixes?

1. Pull out battery for 30 seconds or so. Then replace and try turning the camera on afresh.

1a. Same as 1, but for 30 minutes.

1b. Make sure the battery is not almost drained (i.e, recharge it fully since the camera is not responsive enough to show you the info screen)

2. Try a different SD card. A corrupted card could "hang" the startup process.

Sounds like a battery problem to me. I had a similar experience when, by mistake, I left the camera on with Auto Power turned off. I had the LED light up and nothing else would work. Changed the battery and everything was fine.

Hope this is all your problem is, good luck.

Thanks for all the input. Much appreciated. In fact, I did immediately did discover the battery was dead. So I pulled it and recharged to full. Still no change. I suspect the card may be bad since it had started to auto eject from the card reader all on it's own before this happened. Off on a shoot before the hurricane arrives. Will check with another SD card when I return.

Cheers.

Can you elaborate? The charger seemed to be functioning properly (green LED & orange LED are lit (or unlit) properly during charging process). Thx. Also, I checked the SD card with Apple's Disk Utility and it seems fully functional. Have sent an email to Leica USA tech guys- awaiting their response...

re the SD card, what make? Also, what firmware are you running on your M9. All these things can conspire to make the thing look dead when it ain't - appreciate how bad it would feel though.

In terms of a checklist it looks like:

Battery and / or Charger - I had an M9 charger fail on me...

SD card - though this shouldn't cause a "dead" camera - simply a "no card" error message.

Look inside the battery compartment and check that there's no physical damage - you should be able to see the 5 goldpins in a neat row.

I still reckon that the battery looks like the cause - unless there's something seriously wrong.. :(

Card is a SanDisk Ultra II 16GB. It's what I've always used in the camera. Pins are all fine. I now wondering if this is a firmware issue - the new firmware was recently installed... to make sure, is there a user recourse to reinstalling the firmware or might this require a dealer or Leica visit? Seems like I should pursue this course.

Yes, tried another battery at my dealer - no luck. I gave up and decided that the M9 take a quick vacation to NJ, hopefully it won't need a visit to Solms as well. We'll see... Thanks for all the help.

Just finished a 5500 mile trip across the US with it. Could be it picked up a bug on the way!

Honestly, the color this camera delivers is to my mind better than my work horse H3DII-39 or my 5DmkII. Could use some extra res though... where's that M10??
