piblondin Posted September 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like the normal Leica strap as it's plain and black, doesn't slip, is the right length, is light, and can easily fit inside a small case with my camera. However, the branding distracts me. Is there a commonly available, similar strap that just doesn't have the huge LEICA on it?

budrichard Posted September 2, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 2, 2010 I've just got to ask the question! With the branding behind your head on your neck when using your camera, how can the branding distract you?-Dick
beoon Posted September 2, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 2, 2010 The rubber part of the strap with the "Leica" on it can be very easily removed by pulling it off. The the strap is more compact without it and easier to store in the camera bag. I have already done this to my strap that came with the M9 Regards Alan
piblondin Posted September 2, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted September 2, 2010 Thanks! Any tips as to whether to go for a small or medium size UpStrap?
piblondin Posted September 2, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted September 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bud, it's like wearing a blank t-shirt vs. wearing one with a logo or slogan on the back. You still know it's there, and other people certainly know it's there. That was an extreme example; I'm really not that conscious of the strap, though I would prefer it to be unbranded. ismon Posted September 2, 2010 Share #8 Posted September 2, 2010 You can never go wrong by staying with Leica. I've always liked the 14,258 strap. Black, no logo, has a non-slip pad, attaches easily without chewing up the camera lugs. It's 5/8" (16mm) wide--enough for the heaviest SLR, but works just as well with a diminutive LTM. Not expensive. menos I M6 Posted September 3, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 3, 2010 The rubber part of the strap with the "Leica" on it can be very easily removed by pulling it off.The the strap is more compact without it and easier to store in the camera bag. I have already done this to my strap that came with the M9 Regards Alan I use 5 original Leica straps, that are modified like described (use a sharp knife or scissor, to slit the rubber and peel it off). I have made two original Leica wrist straps out of another of these slim M straps, that I use occasionally. There is nothing better, than the original Leica M strap. It is slim, it feels soft, it folds perfectly to no size, it connects and disconnects extremely quick, it can be changed in length extremely quick, it is safe, it doesn't get loose or lost or broken. I like them exactly for that. I will check out the wider version, to exchange the other straps on my bigger cameras.
250swb Posted September 3, 2010 Share #10 Posted September 3, 2010 Thanks! Any tips as to whether to go for a small or medium size UpStrap? UpStrap make a 'rangefinder' version called the RF/DC. I use one that I put the Leica strap ends on and it works very well. I suppose the only thing that does niggle me about it is the rubber grip (which is very grippy), its a bit heavy and makes it more difficult to wrap the strap around the wrist, or it swings around in the wind with some momentum if the camera is on a tripod. budrichard Posted September 3, 2010 Share #11 Posted September 3, 2010 Bud, it's like wearing a blank t-shirt vs. wearing one with a logo or slogan on the back. You still know it's there, and other people certainly know it's there. That was an extreme example; I'm really not that conscious of the strap, though I would prefer it to be unbranded. The lettering is black embossing on black and I seriously doubt that anybody from a few feet away can read the Leica marking. BTW you also have a camera hanging around your neck which is kind of a dead giveaway. The reason I am being so adamant is that the Leica design is so fool proof in the way the strap attaches and locks in place rather than the usual heavy double rings that one has to pry apart to install and remove. Leica spent a lot of time on the design and its the best on the market. -Dick
poptart Posted September 3, 2010 Share #12 Posted September 3, 2010 Or you could have Luigi make a strap to your specifications for you.I had a black one and a cognac brown one made for me. I believe he does some straps with shoulder pads if you prefer that. Welcome, dear visitor! piblondin Posted September 8, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted September 8, 2010 Alright, I think I'll stick with the Leica strap. The only issue I really have with it is that on one, the ring has started to separate, and I haven't been able to bend it back into place. So, it's difficult to remove the plastic. (I often like to alternate between the Leica strap and a Gordy's wrist strap.)
jlancasterd Posted September 8, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 8, 2010 I've replaced the Leica strap on my M9 with an Artisan and Artist strap. These are made from 3/8" diameter black, plaited silk rope with strongly stitched leather ends. They are extremely strong (I use one on my much heavier Nikon D700 and have no qualms about its ability to cope with the weight). They are also remarkably supple and very comfortable. Unfortunately they are also rather expensive - over £90 each here in UK.
