andym911 Posted August 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) After shooting yesterday I loaded the images off the card just before the battery ran out. Charged it as usual , back in the camera today and nothing. Just a quicl flash of the red light, a beep and then nothing. Repeated this several times, changed battery etc...all to no avail. It seems the camera is dead. Currently taken teh battery out and wil leave overnight before trying again tomorrow. This exact same thing happened to my M8 and the only way I got that back working was to buy a new battery, after that it worked fine. Anyone know if I ahve a battery issue (all 3!) or is my charger screwed up, or is it a trip to Solms? Its a real pain in the a** andy Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have a second hand M8.2 and 4 batteries - 3 from that were bought new by me. On several occasions, I was surprised by an early dead battery, which I though was strange, as I have all batteries numbered and use them sequentially. I always charge them, as I come home and have 3 full spares in the bag. I can only conclude, that sometimes a battery is actually not charged, despite both LEDs are indicating a full charge on the battery charger. Good luck with the camera and batteries. I will look for a second charger, to go safe (at the moment, I recharge my batteries twice, to minimize this issue). Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
karl101 Posted August 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 30, 2010 Were both lights flashing on the charger? if so, then the battery won't of been charged. I've had this a couple of times, I had to take the battery out of the charger and put it back in again to get it charged. I don't know why this happened, its a bit annoying. Karl. andym911 Posted August 30, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted August 30, 2010 thanks for the replies... so I charged both batteries again and both lights come on in the charger.....same result when I put them into the camera...no response except the red light and a message that the base cover is not attached...after this nothing. So I called Solms today and they also suspect that either the battery or charger are kaputt. I found that after turning on and the red light has stopped flashing (also there is no battery charge indicator or number of shots left on the SD card) if you use the shutter release a few times the camera comes to life, well it does for me. toyfel Posted August 30, 2010 Share #11 Posted August 30, 2010 Didn't have any serious problems with my M8 since I bought it in 2007. But like many others here I do not trust the charger. It shows some strange, erratic behavior and it is always a good idea to check twice if the battery really has been fully charged. Seems top be a fault by design, a second charger I bought behaves the same way. I also made it a habit to switch batteries in the camera very early even if the indicator on the camera suggests there is some charge left. Too many reported camera faults seem to be somehow related to low battery charge. As others said, I´d try again to charge the battery. On the one hand great, on the other very disturbing. Will get the new charger tomorrow and hopefully find some new batteries to buy. After the charger indicates a full battery (both LEDs constantly on), I take the batteries out and stick them in again for a second charge. This way, I charge my batteries twice - always. I charge them, as soon, as the camera indicates, they are not 100% full at the next convenience (this can be one bar missing or a completely depleted battery). From my experience with Leica battery chargers & batteries for my M8 & DMR, as well as the R8 Motordrive, which is very similar, if the "CHARGE" light is on (Orange for the M8, Red for the DMR & R8), it needs to remain charging until there's only a Green light. On the DMR, if the Red light is on, it needs to remain charging until it's off. Often, the batteries aren't full charged, because the last part of the trickle charge takes a long time. Even if the light goes off, I leave my batteries attached to the charger overnight & it works wonders. Don't EVER let the battery drain all the way down. It's certain death, in the near future. Unless you can sacrifice the battery for an important job, as soon as the battery losses the the first 2/3 of charge, remove it & use another. As long, as the battery is charging, the appropriate LEDs are blinking. I am pretty sure one came with camera is the defective one, but I can tell which one is which since I did not mark when I got my second battery. I have not had the problem for a while (over a year now). But, I would say it is almost common to me that all of sudden camera stops working (with redlight, but nothing else). I would see as much as two sticks of battery and next click things will go dead. It took me a while before I figured out it was the battery causing the issue. Glad to hear you got it back.
