What is the profile of people who post such things? You know, it's really just about establishing a sense of community, being friendly, passing the time of day, having some fun. stunsworth Posted August 27, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 27, 2010 For what it's worth I've never understood the 'love' thing either. What is _really_ pissing me off at the moment is the increased use of the ':rolleyes' tag. It seems to be spreading like wildfire, and is usually used as a patronising coda to a patronising comment. bill Posted August 27, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 27, 2010 Interesting... I find myself using the rolleyes tag more in reaction to an apparent general decline in the ability to spot irony and humour in my (and others) posts. I use the smilies like claptraps - "ba-dum, tish!" when I think that the "joke" may be a little too subtle for some. Regards, Bill
andybarton Posted August 27, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Rolls eyes has always struck me as a slightly sarcastic "smilie". I have used it in the past, but don't use it very offten. I have never seen the point of typing <grin> when will do just as well.

aesop Posted August 27, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 27, 2010 I LOVE BBC's "Grumpy Old Men/Women"..... ...pffft, what's love (or value) got to do with my TV licence fee?
andybarton Posted August 27, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 27, 2010 Me too. One of the Grumpy Old Men was at school with me... It's all in the education and background. I blame the English teacher.
Guido Posted August 27, 2010 Share #11 Posted August 27, 2010 What's that all about? Collectors? First-time buyers?IMO, it's an attempt of insecure owners to gather consolation from others that their vintage gear is still worthwhile keeping, while secretly they lust after the M9. Alternatively, buyer's remorse after an overpriced spur-of-the-moment purchase on the flea market.

Guest stnami Posted August 27, 2010 Share #13 Posted August 27, 2010 ........... not a ':rolleyes' tag..... it is image of a small round object looking up at the comment
andybarton Posted August 27, 2010 Share #14 Posted August 27, 2010 IMO, it's an attempt of insecure owners to gather consolation from others that their vintage gear is still worthwhile keeping, while secretly they lust after the M9. Just for the record, I am not one of those who secretly lust after an M9. Nor am I insecure. What of the "I love my X1" posters? Explain that so easily. Guest joewehry Posted August 27, 2010 Share #16 Posted August 27, 2010 What we really need on the forum is a Duff Duff icon to end a dramatic post, like when someone announces they are getting a divorce, being charged with murder, switching to film or digital, or leaving the forum. Now THAT's interesting!
plasticman Posted August 27, 2010 Share #17 Posted August 27, 2010 . Mani I thought you left and bought a porsche and went to their forum imants - if I could afford a Porsche I'd be on a Swiss forum loving my Alpa12 instead.

Guest nafpie Posted August 27, 2010 Share #19 Posted August 27, 2010 A newbie here. I see these threads declaring "I Love My <insert camera>" What's that all about? Collectors? First-time buyers? What is the profile of people who post such things? Is it really so hard to imagine that people start to like (or love) their tools, especially if those tools are excellent quality, reliable and a fun to use, making the visual dreams of their owners comes true, making customers happy and generating an income? Is it so hard to understand, that a Leica for many people is more than a piece of metal and glas? Even if the camera is more important than the pictures (maybe true for some): That is not a problem at all - not for you and me, not for them. plasticman Posted August 27, 2010 Share #20 Posted August 27, 2010 But anyways, seriously, I like those "I love my..." threads. With some cameras that I'm personally particularly fond of (like the M6), the images and sometimes the stories that lay behind the posts are both interesting and occasionally even heart-warming. Now if some people want to limit the forum to just threads like "My M9 sensor has cracked - IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!" or "I personally hate film so I'm going to post some troll comment about how film is dead" then fair enough. I'd find that forum dispiriting and sad. The one we have, with all its diversity and differences of opinion, manages to be (mostly) both civil and entertaining. The expressions of 'love' are endearing. The world is already full of sad and random acts of violence and hatred. I can't understand why anyone needs to be so cynical and low-spirited about these threads that they have to think that they are motivated by envy... IMO, it's an attempt of insecure owners to gather consolation from others that their vintage gear is still worthwhile keeping, while secretly they lust after the M9.
