Scola77 Posted August 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I took my X1 to a wedding this past weekend and got some really good shots. When the day turned to night, I had no choice but to switch to flash. At first I threw everything in automatic and fired away. What I noticed was that everything was blown out and blurred. I noticed it fired at the highest ISO I allowed (1600), the slowest SS (1/30) and the largest aperture (f/2.8). I quickly adjusted and switched to ISO 800 and a SS of 1/60 - 1/120. I am a little perplexed why the X1 would not give me better results in automatic mode. It was almost like it did not even register the flash was up. Is this a limitation of the camera or something I am doing wrong? Secondly, if I were to get a external flash for these situations (Leica hot shoe flash), would I get better results? Thanks! JeTexas Posted August 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 23, 2010 I was snapping some photos at a wedding reception as well this weekend. I had terrible results using the flash in Auto mode. My best results were flash on, Aperture to A, Shutter to 1/2000 and ISO to 1600. That put an end to the blurries.
Scola77 Posted August 23, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted August 23, 2010 Ok, so it must be a limitation of the camera. I guess I will keep it in manual for low light shots w/ flash.
Nicoleica Posted August 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 23, 2010 I don't have an X1, but I've just downloaded the manual to try and check this for you. Do have your camera set in the correct mode for flash? There seem to be quite a few options, and some of these, such as 'automatic with slow shutter speeds', or 'Studio' flash mode could give some of the results that you received. Scola77 Posted August 23, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted August 23, 2010 Tried in both auto flash mode and forced flash mode with terrible results. Got decent to great results when switching to manual exposure.
tom0511 Posted August 24, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 24, 2010 I also dont like the auto-flash-sync of 1/30. Thats why I either presellect 1/125 and set f-stop to A (which will lead to f2.8 often) or if I do not want shallow DOF I set both f-stop and Exp to manual. I still wish and request from Leica to allow to set shorter times than 1/30 in the menue for auto-iso. I also think it would be wise if Leica would tweak the auto-flash-sync to 1/125 instead of 1/30.
