I have the Domke and I love it. I too carry my iPad which slips neatly into the outside pouch so I can always access it easily. I do take care to carry it against my body though.

Thieves will be sure to access it easily too, even against your body.

This is definitely not the best place to store it. I have the J-803 which is a tad bigger and keep it on the inside pocket ;-)

I only carry one camera and two lenses, plus ipad of course.

I have the Hadley Pro and I feel it's a wee bit too large for the above unless you will also be carrying quite a few other bits and bobs. My preferred option of a smaller Hadley insert stuffed inside a canvas bag is fine for one body, a couple of lenses and iPad.

Incidentally, I'm also rather surprised that Thorsten managed to stuff a 15" MBP into a Hadley Pro. I often carry a MacBook Air in mine and think that's a pretty decent fit for the available space.

Which Domke do you have? I was thinking about the Domke F-831, but can't really find actual pic, not sure if there's a place for ipad.

Hi there,

I've been extremely happy with my Hadley Pro bag. I can easily get the M9, several lenses, charger, spare batteries, cards and an iPad in it and it's so easy to carry. I've reviewed it here if you want to take a look at it in 'real life'.:)

Very sweet, thanks! Do you think will the Hadley Pro small do the job for me? I want it as small as possible.

It's possible. Remember that the Hadley Pro Small bag is two inches narrower, so it's possible it will be ok for you. The iPad will fit but you should check one out to see if there is enough room for your camera and two lenses. I would have thought so.

Also see Billingham's site for details of the two:-

Good Luck :)

Yes, I think it looks slimmer, but only by a little. The inner protection isn't as good as the Hadley, plus the insert pops out as a whole unit - much easier when you want the bag to double as a casual holdall without your camera gear. Also the rear pocket for the iPad is not zippered with a protective flap like it is on the Hadley, which means your iPad will be safer in the Billingham. The Domke comes over as a more casual, lower quality product, but many people like it for it's looks.:)

My khaki Billingham Hadley is a great bag, but it's gotten a bit "dingy" looking from hard use.

When I consolidated - I prefer to think of it as practicing personal discipline - I wanted a small, rugged, unobtrusive and inexpensive bag that could handle a complete camera,

a couple of extra lens (all I had left), small flash and my ever present i-pod and other

":stuff" - batteries, sd cards, charger etc. A secure place for airline tickets, passport and

reservations numbers was also important.

I found this Naneu Pro Military Ops LIMA bag - perfect size, waterproof (couple of very wet

days on the Great Wall was its first test) and well padded. Not quite the snob appeal of

the Billingham or the Fogg, but it fit nicely inside my single carry-on and gave me a great

day bag at my destinations.

I've got an old Domke F-802, have been using it to carry Leica's for something like seven years now. It's holding up nicely, although the canvas has faded quite a bit over the years. Because I travel so much, I consider that to be an advantage; it looks like an old beat up satchel full of paper, and doesn't attract any attention at all.

The iPad fits nicely, with room to spare. Most of the time it sits in the inside pocket, and for extended travel I further protect it with an M-Edge neoprene case which has a convenient carrying handle that doesn't project from the case except when in use. Sometimes if the iPad is in active use, say if I'm just moving a short distance, then I'll throw it in the outside pocket.

This setup works well with an M8, an extra lens, a spare battery and charger, a small case full of SD cards, the charger for my Blackberry, pen and paper, parking meter change, a folder or two of work things in the back outside pocket, and all the other little accumulations necessary for 10 days on the road... with room to spare (although I do pack lightly). It fits under an airplane seat with enough room to sort of stretch out ones feet, at least one at a time. Once on a 28-hour trip to Chicago I shoved a spare pair of socks and underwear and a tee-shirt in there and went without my second bag full of clothing.

One trick on the Domke, when I first got it the shoulder strap clips had an annoying habit of snagging on the edges of the top flap during a shoot. Turning the clips so the opening faces outward made that issue go away, it hasn't happened in years.

If I were buying today I'd probably go with something like the J-803, which wasn't yet available when I bought mine.

I've also looked at the Think Tank bags, the smaller ones, but they just look too new and shiny. Last week the guy in the TSA line in front of me at the airport had one, and I immediately thought "photographer." Just to dispel any lingering doubts, on a closer look he had his business card prominently showing on the outside of the bag.

I tried the Hadley Pro first but didn't like it. Too bulky, too fancy and I didn't like the front pockets as they didn't feel secure enough to me. I sold it and bough the domke f-803 waxwear and i love it. Fits the ipad with dodo case, my m9 with two lenses, accessories, and room for more lenses.

Steve Huff has a great review on it.

I bought a Billingham L2 this summer and it accommodates the M9 (M8), a few lenses AND my iPad. Is is 3cm deeper than the Hadley Pro but both lower and narrower.

It is definitely smaller than the Hadley pro, but has a different approach...

It might be a good solution for you too. It is not listed on their site anymore, but they still had some stock left.
