Advertisement Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Hi davidhunternyc, Take a look here Leica X1 GPS Tagging?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
h00ligan Posted August 20, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 20, 2010 David, there's a lot of software if you take along a hand held gps and set the proper times on both, it will auto tag for you. Are you on Mac or pc? Some really nice Mac suites, you just download a trip log. It may even be possible with a cell phone...depends what you are using. F1Addict Posted August 20, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2010 I've been tagging in Aperture. If anyone has a more efficient method please let me know.
stunsworth Posted August 20, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2010 If you use an iPhone 3G or later there's an application call 'Trails' that will record your GPS position over a period of time, and that can then be used to update you photographs - from any digital camera - with your position when the photograph was taken using another application. As mentioned above, the clocks must either be in sync, or you must know the offset - eg. that the camera is 1:30 ahead of the phone. JeTexas Posted August 20, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 20, 2010 Here's some info on how to set it up. The Eye-Fi SD cards make it easy. What is Geotagging? | Eye-Fi NOTE: There's a disclaimer on the Eye-Fi page saying DO NOT use an Eye-Fi card with an M9 as it could damage the SD slot. h00ligan Posted August 20, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 20, 2010 The Eye-fi is not a great solution completely, unfortunately. It uses wifi triangulation. If you want to geotag in nature, that's not going to do it. It may even not work well in major cities. Here in Phoenix there's a very low likelihood that I'll even show available networks on my phone, which is going to get a stronger signal than the eye-fi. I'd suggest looking through their support forums before buying. Stunsworth, thanks for the link to that iphone software - I hadn't heard of it. Stunsworth, thanks for the link to that iphone software - I hadn't heard of it. i hadn't heard of that software before either- but i have previously used a similar method w/o the continuous drain on the iphone battery (it wasnt that good on the 3gs- way better on ip4).... i used motionx gps program to mark a waypoint then after i got back to my room (i was on vakay) i was able to email the waypoint to my email address and when i was home i was able to upload it to my computer.....and manually tag my photos but now i can then use houdahgeo to tag the photos.... the main advantages it appears are: a) no constant drain on the battery i can take waypoints at the time i take the picture. i really am not such a nerd that i need the entire track (well i am - but that is what the garmin is for) c) 1 less program needed on the iphone
ChiILX1 Posted November 19, 2010 Share #8 Posted November 19, 2010 Has anyone used a lot of different iPhone geo tagging options and can say what the best is with an explanation? Thanks
fimkap Posted November 28, 2010 Share #9 Posted November 28, 2010 Can Eye-Fi cards be used with Leica X1? I don't see X1 listed in supported Leica cameras on Eye Fi site.
h00ligan Posted November 28, 2010 Share #10 Posted November 28, 2010 I thought there were two ways it could be used, the first configured in a computer and works with any camera the other was within specific camera menus.
JeTexas Posted November 29, 2010 Share #11 Posted November 29, 2010 This is all theoretical because I still haven't invested in an Eye-Fi card, but there is an Eye-Fi iPhone app, so you can set your photos to immediately update from your camera to your iPhone, and the iPhone will then upload them to Flickr or Facebook or whichever applications you set it up with. Essentially, photos would be uploaded to your Flickr account within a minute or two of being shot, and the iPhone/iPad would geotag them with your location upon upload. I'm sure this is a massive drain on the batteries of both devices, but it's the most integrated solution I've seen thus far. I haven't done any research to see if this option is available for Android phones or not.

JeTexas Posted December 1, 2010 Share #13 Posted December 1, 2010 Ahhh, you're correct. I could have sworn I read that their iPhone app allowed the ad-hoc networking. However, there is a $7.99 app called ShutterSnitch that does, but it doesn't make it clear whether or not the pictures wirelessly transferred through ShutterSnitch would be accessible to other apps to be uploaded to photo sites with GPS tagging. JeTexas Posted January 4, 2011 Share #14 Posted January 4, 2011 Ok, the new "direct mode" function will finally let Eye-Fi send straight to your iPhone, which can then upload and geotag photos in Flickr. Should be available soon. Eye-Fi's Direct Mode unites phone and camera in holy matrimony -- Engadget
h00ligan Posted January 5, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 5, 2011 But still relies on wifi triangulation?
JeTexas Posted January 5, 2011 Share #16 Posted January 5, 2011 But still relies on wifi triangulation? No, you can have your phone do the tagging via GPS.
peer_kugler Posted January 5, 2011 Share #17 Posted January 5, 2011 Geo tagging works great with the X1 and M9. I am using the Phototrackr Mini from Gisteq. You just turn it on when going on a shoot and it will track your position. When you get home you download the log with the included software or MyTracks and then use Jeffrey’s “GPS-Support” Geoencoding Plugin for Lightroom to import the GPS data into your raw files. It involves a few steps, but is a great system. I am very happy with it. The Lightroom plug-in also allows you to put location data into your images with Google Earth. Works great.
