'08 regarding references to the S1 at Photokina: "What is fascinating are the references to one of Leica's commercial failures, the S1 digital scanning camera launched in 1996. This sold poorly and cost the firm dearly despite being the only camera in the world capable of delivering 40 million pixels. Perhaps the world was not ready for that but one advocate of its potential was Dr Andreas Kaufmann, now owner of Leica Camera. He admitted (at last year's Rochester LHSA meeting) to buying the last one from Leica , shortly before he bought the whole business!" Yes there were three versions : S1 Pro 5140 x 5140 pixels 185 seconds scanning time S1 Alpha 2750 x 2750 pixels 75 seconds scanning time S1 High Speed 4000 x 4000 pixels 18 seconds scanning time and I think they were available up until 2000/2001 ... many still in use by museums and and art galleries ... and by all accounts can out-perform DSLRs as far as still life results are concerned ... but scans take time.
