Roehunter Posted August 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) After some trouble mounting my lens I took some pictures. Then I imported them in Aperture 3 I noticed that my lens was "Unknown". I have set lens detection to on in the camera (Leica M8.2 + Leica Summarit 35). Neither does the aperture shows in exif info. Is there something wrong with my camera or lens? I have a question about zone focusing, if I set aperture to 8 and distance to 5 m I should get focus from 2,5 m to infinity but the patch in the middle only shows focus at 5 m? Can you trust this way to get proper focus?
Advertisement Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Hi Roehunter, Take a look here First pictures and some questions. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted August 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 3, 2010 The depth of field indicated on the lenses is rather optimistic in my experience as they're based on the production of small prints, and not large prints or even 100% pixel peeking. If you have an aperture at f8 I would use the f4 settings. The great thing with digital is that it's very easy for you to try it yourself and see what results you get. I don't use Aperture so can't answer that question, though the lens and estimated aperture does appear in Lightroom.
earleygallery Posted August 3, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 3, 2010 I have a question about zone focusing, if I set aperture to 8 and distance to 5 m I should get focus from 2,5 m to infinity but the patch in the middle only shows focus at 5 m? Can you trust this way to get proper focus? The rangefinder patch will only show you what is exactly in focus. I would suggest getting used to using it properly rather than zone focussing - although it's a useful technique in certain situations but not a substitute for actually focussing on your intended subject correctly. winks147 Posted August 3, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 3, 2010 Lens detection - and Exif info - only works when the lens is coded.

The EXIF header from your image does report that the lens used was a f/2.5 35mm lens. The aperture used will not be reported since this information is not communicated to the camera. Jeff I have a subscription of his site. I read a lot of his articles before I bought my Leica M8.2 and the Summarit 35. Thanks for the tip about the article about zone focusing, I have only read those about reviews.
Roehunter Posted August 4, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted August 4, 2010 I read in another thread about Aperture 3 and Leica M. Aperture 3 can't read all info from the camera about lens and aperture. Guess I have to live with it but it would have been nice to see what aperture was used.
stunsworth Posted August 4, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 4, 2010 The aperture shows up in LR, but it's only a guess, accurate to +- 1 stop or so.
