Lightroom 3

Recommended Posts

Tom it sounds like you already obtained a licence for Lightroom 2? If so the upgrade path is to pay for the upgrade from Adobe (there is no further entitlement from Leica Camera if you have already received a Lightroom 2 licence). I don't know where you are but the upgrade is USD99.

If you have not already done so you can download a full copy of Lightroom 3 which is fully functional for a 30 day trial and you convert that to a full licence by obtaining a serial number from Adobe.

In my opinion the upgrade is well worth having for the new features.

For those whom have little clue as what can be done with Lightroom (like myself) I can whole heartedly recommend the following publication:

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers, by Martin Evening.

Thanks for mentioning this book, Jan. I did download Lightroom 3, but haven't delved into it yet. I've been using Aperture 3 for the last 5 months or so. I may wait until the winter months to give it a try, but I do like to have a book to refer to, so thank you again.:)

I've always used the Adobe Raw Converter in Photoshop. What does Lightroom do that the Raw Converter doesn't? Unfortunately since I bought my X1 used, I can't access the Owners Area or download Lightroom. Is it worth spending money on?

How to obtain the serial number?

Thanks in advance.:)

Yes, I do have the LT2 license. When I downloaded it, there was a message saying that they would be upgrading this to v.3 and we would hear from them as soon as they worked out the details.

Did you not have the same message?

As a new owner, I was able to log into the Leica Owner's site, or whatever it's called, and go through the steps to register and then opt to get my free version (I believe they said 2 copies were available as in for 2 different computers) of Lightroom 3. I followed the directions and after I did everything I received an email from Adobe with the serial number I needed to finish things up. I'm not sure if that is helpful to you mr. born. If you already have Lightroom2, wouldn't you have an email or something that you'd kept with your registration information? I'd like to believe that Adobe Lightroom would have a way of sending you your current serial number...

In terms of straight RAW conversion LR gets you nothing additional. Same engine, different interface. But LR is a full image organization and management solution, like Bridge but better. It also excels at processing many images, and has strong printing and web output capabilities. And it now has some very good local editing tools. And all edits are non-destructive and can be changed.

I think most LR users are finding that with every new release they need PS less.

I've also been unable to register on the Leica Owners Area for the past 24 hours and my email to Leica UK is unable to be delivered so....... I only have 2 days left of the trial:(

I endorse this recommendation.

I've been reading the LR2 version from Michael Freeman. With the introduction of LR3 I'm tempted to buy Freeman's new book, anyone can tell me how does Evening's writing style differ from Freeman. And how does this book structured?

Lightroom 3.2 is not out and available for owners to download.

Once again, it must be stressed that Leica will ONLY give you a serial number for ONE version of Lightroom. If they have already sent you a licence number for v2, you will have to pay for the upgarde to v3 yourself.

Andy - I think you meant to say Lightroom 3.2 is now out... I should also add that it's the 3.2 RC (Release Candidate) so isn't the final code. This said, I'm now using it and it seems to be stable + is (in my experience) faster on re-draws / preview generation than the original release of LR3.

Tom and Mr Bom

Firstly anyone can download Lightroom in whatever the current version is from Adobe and use it for 30 days for free.

If you bought a qualifying camera from Leica then you could download via their supplied link USING the TAN number that comes with your camera. The file you get is identical to the one anyone can get. However what you also get is a serial number as a separate e-mail. If you fill in that serial number when you start your trial version it becomes a full licence. If you were sent a serial number by Leica then it only works for the version that was current when you applied. Just recently that is for LR3 of course

So if you got Lightroom 2 either by buying a retail version or by using the TAN number Leica gave you, you have to pay a reduced upgrade fee if you want to change to Lightroom 3. The price varies depending on where you live. In the USA it costs USD99

I hope that helps
