shootinglulu Posted August 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello. The Apple salesman tells me that the macbook pro 15'' 13.3/2.4/2x2GB/250/SD will be fine for use with my M9. I may download many photo's at a time with LR. I would be grateful for any advice.. Thanks:confused:

elgenper Posted August 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 1, 2010 FWIW, I´ve got the new MBP MBP 2.4 GHz dual core with 4 GB RAM; it´s the 13" one, not the 15". It doesn´t have any problems with M9 images, either with LR 2 or 3, but the screen is too small for any serious work with images. For storage and first check while travelling, it´s OK. LeicaBraz Posted August 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 1, 2010 I have the 15" 2.66 with 8GB and the 500GB hard drive. Excellent. Comes with slot for memory cards. Rgds
bman Posted August 1, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 1, 2010 Hello. The Apple salesman tells me that the macbook pro 15'' 13.3/2.4/2x2GB/250/SD will be fine for use with my M9. Previous Core2 15" also has no issue handling LR. FYI, the MacBook Pro i7 does not switch to the NVIDIA graphic card but keep using Intel Graphic when running LR3. Still much faster than Aperture 3 which uses the NVIDIA card.
shootinglulu Posted August 1, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted August 1, 2010 Thanks all. I got the 13'' mbp i mentioned above. Very happy, my first Mac and setting up and using feels so smooth. Downloaded my 2nd free lightroom (thanks leica) and downloaded ect nice and easily. My only qualms so far are..the screen iq looks so much more sophisticated on the Mac than on my Eizo screen, wish my desk top computer was mac too..large screen. Maybe the 17'' would have been handier for editing and for 2 people watching a dvd in bed! Thanks a lot. Lucy
NZDavid Posted August 6, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Don't worry, the 13" is a goodie. I got the standard Macbook on run-out special and am quite happy with it. The resolution and brightness of the screen is excellent.
Marty Posted August 7, 2010 Share #8 Posted August 7, 2010 I really wanted the 13". Greed and insecurity made me buy the 15". Now I still want the 13"
JPH1962 Posted August 7, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 7, 2010 Hi there I started some 8 months ago with a mbp 13.3, but found with the time that the scoren was too small, espeacially combined with the native resolution. Today i use a mbp 17 for the photostuff and for the first check and daily web and mail just an iPad. For the moment that seems to be a good combo espeacially because the ipad lasst Long on battery and is Small enough to Be everywhere, Rgds Jph
Nicoleica Posted August 7, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 7, 2010 Thanks all.I wish my desk top computer was mac too..large screen. Maybe the 17'' would have been handier for editing Don't forget that you can plug a larger monitor into your Mac, and then you have an extra desktop with a lot more space. I'm writing this via my 13" Macbook with a 24" screen connected. If you have an iPad, you can also use that as an extra screen too.
shootinglulu Posted August 8, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted August 8, 2010 Thanks all. Loving the 13 mbp,, not so good for LR editing away from home, the 17 would be better. Not really complaining too much, i;m a mac convert. Thanks. Lucy
keithdunlop Posted August 8, 2010 Share #12 Posted August 8, 2010 I'm still using the older 2.16 Ghz MacBook Pro with 3gb RAM for editing in LR3, however I drive an Apple 23" HD Cinema screen from it as well. Any laptop screen is far too small in my opinion for serious editing. I get pretty serious bottlenecks in performance when I try to work on files residing on my NAS even though it's run through a gigabyte router. But for files stored locally on the MBP hard drive it's fine. That all being said, I'm moving to a Mac Pro in a couple of weeks to get the added processing power of dual processors and more RAM capabilities. I will also be able to back up newly imported files to a second internal HD until I can move the finished files to the NAS.
JMacD Posted August 15, 2010 Share #13 Posted August 15, 2010 Do not rule out the iMac. I had thought the iMac was for lightweight use. Then I visited a photographer friend who had a loaded one. I figured if it worked for them, maybe I was overlooking an option. You can get a whale of a system for a cost effective price. Now that CS5 allows using more than 8 gigs ram on a mac, the iMac allows you to go to 16. Plus it can come with quad core. Plus the iMac now comes in a version with 1 gig for video. A game changer. 16gig Ram, Quad core useable by C5, 1gig video are all unavailable in a mac laptop at any price. They are available in a mac pro, but you really have to pay for a mac pro's expandability. Much of the power in a mac pro is not yet useable by LR or CS5, when you go beyond quad core. The cost effectiveness is better than the pro, or the laptop. People think it is not for heavyweight photography but it is in the quad core 27. I had been choking workflow using a laptop plus external display when I had both light room , CS5, and anything else running. And the iMac is portable in a carrying bag made for it. Yes the glossy screen means you don't want a window behind you, but the glossy screen of an iPad had demonstrated to me that glossiness is not a deal breaker. BTW, I probably still have gone with a laptop with merely 8 gig if I did not have my iPad for portability. But the loaded iMac plus an iPad costs less than a half strength but fully loaded MacBook pro. Full disclosure: I have an S2 and those files are huge. I needed power beyond what Apple currently puts in a laptop. You can get a PC laptop that can do it, but not mac, and I have so much mac software I won't switch. BerndReini Posted August 15, 2010 Share #14 Posted August 15, 2010 I just replaced the 2x2 GB Ram in my 17inch MBPro with 2x4 GB and I am running Snow Leopard with Lightroom and CS5 in 64bit. The extra RAM makes a big difference. I would definitely recommend 8GB.
57andrew Posted January 1, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 1, 2011 I have a 17" macbook pro and it is NOT light. Its a laptop that you wouldn't want to port too much. I think the 15" would be my choice today - I just liked the big screen.
phancj Posted January 2, 2011 Share #16 Posted January 2, 2011 My 13" does real fine, just make sure its the top specs. Actually, even my 11" MB air is great running PS Elements and LR, but I upgraded the processor and ram to max as well. I use it during traveling, rest of time my 13" MBP. sblitz Posted January 2, 2011 Share #17 Posted January 2, 2011 i have the 17", originally bought for work, and it is very heavy to tote around. At home it is hooked to a large eizo screen for editing. MBP is great machine for everything concerned. i am, however, looking for something smaller to carry around just to put files in and have a look see. ipad gets very mixed reviews for dngs, and i only shoot dngs. deirdre Posted January 7, 2011 Share #18 Posted January 7, 2011 Largest hard drive you can get, the most RAM you can get. Apart from that, I don't think the processor speed is the most critical aspect. Size is, of course, a matter of preference. I got: MacBookPro 15.4/"2.53 GHz cpu/2X2GB RAM/500 HD

shootinglulu Posted January 7, 2011 Author Share #20 Posted January 7, 2011 I didn't know you could choose the screen!! Thanks very much for the tip.. I have persuaded a friend that he needs to buy my 13'' mbp.. I don't mind toting around a large laptop, it will be worth it to be able to edit in LR on the hoof, impossible for me on the 13'' and a waste of LR.. Thankyou for the advice here.
