marcwilson Posted July 28, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have read the various reviews of the 28mm F2.8 elmarit asph on the M8, along with the various zeiss and voigtlander options. Does anyone know of any reviews of the older elmarit (i.e. version III) on the M8 against the zeiss or just by itself? I already subscribe to reid reviews but as far as I can see only the newer elamrit is reviewed on the M8. Thanks, Marc

bocaburger Posted July 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 29, 2010 Here's my review of the 4th generation 28, based on 3 yrs of use with the M8: it's an awesome lens, with total Leica-like-ness. Sharp, contrasty, nice OOF rendition, virtually flare-free. I had a 3rd generation back when I shot film, and the only reason I went to the 4th version was for the smaller footprint (and less finder intrusion). Performance was such that only someone with intent and determination could find where the 4 improves over the 3, and most of it would be in the outer reaches of the image circle even at f/2.8. Since that is mostly cropped by the M8, the optical differences would be expectably even less. If the size doesn't faze you, the 3rd generation is an economic bargain (something not often found lately in Leica glass). If you want a review that will cost you money, Erwin Puts describes both lenses in his Compendium.
luigi bertolotti Posted July 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 30, 2010 The (Canadian) version 3 is also a very good lens, and I am always surprised on how it performs well even wide open; but has a problem on M8 : is officialy uncodable, and has a screw along the code reading path, which makes DIY coding uneasy (I made 2 or 3 tries before making it to work). The (uncommon) version 1 is absolutely to avoid : softness and flare wide open, metering uncorrect (as declared by Leica, indeed).
