RichardM8 Posted August 10, 2010 Share #21 Posted August 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) It sure looks good and very well made. Famous on the Ms but I don't immediately see how it improves the handling of the X1. Does it compromise the accessability/usage of the top dails and focus/scroll wheel? I think it's worth noting that the camera won't fit the brown leather case and the grey Ever Ready case with the Thumbs Up fitted.

ChiILX1 Posted August 10, 2010 Author Share #22 Posted August 10, 2010 It sure looks good and very well made. You're right- there is no way it will fit in the transport case with the Thumbs Up installed- and I doubt the Everyready- but the System bag will have no problem and neither does mine. As far as how it improves the handling- it improves it dramatically by giving your thumb leverage the same way the handgrip gives your front fingers leverage-a pull from left to right. The nice thing about it though is that the pressure of your thumb pulling to the right actually just pushes the Thumbs Up against the camera - so there is no strain on the hotshoe. It's like a handle for your thumb. It's ergonomic so that your thumb is in it's natural position at an angle. You can kind of see how it improves the handling in the brief video the manufacturer puts on his site: match Technical Services - help. The difference is so immediately apparent that I grinned ear to ear the first time I held it. A very pleasant surprise. I had even asked for the return policy beforehand since I was somewhat unsure of it's effectiveness but I don't think I will ever take it off now

Focus wheel and aperture dial are unaffected and are just as available as before- the shutter speed dial has less available surface area to use to turn but the part that is available is still easy to turn from the 'thumbs up' position. jsrockit Posted August 10, 2010 Share #25 Posted August 10, 2010 To me the X1 handles more like a barnack than an M. The film M, you had the rewind lever that most used as a thumb rest. However, the barnack never had such a lever. I can't bring myself to buy one of these even though I love it on my M8.

However, the barnack never had such a lever. I can't bring myself to buy one of these even though I love it on my M8. maybe that is why i am having trouble pulling the trigger (no pun intended) on the thumb rest.... its the aesthetics..... for the same reason i just can't get myself to get a case/bumper for myiphone4.... its just 2 pretty to mess up with a case and the x1 is 2 pretty to mess with the barnack inspired design
ChiILX1 Posted August 10, 2010 Author Share #27 Posted August 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Style is personal preference... I'd just like to attest that the functionality and quality is superb. For me, I enjoy the styling much more than the handgrip which IMO looks plasticky, disrupts the metal lines on the camera, and adds additional height. The Thumbs Up, as opposed to the handgrip, appears much more like Leica quality. It also enables me to avoid putting my thumb against the screen, and makes a world of difference in my grip opening the door to many more one-handed shot possibilities. BB W Posted August 10, 2010 Share #33 Posted August 10, 2010 I can see how this thumbs up could make the X1 much easier to use and could really add to the stability of the camera. I may have to give the dealer in my neck of the woods (Tamarkin) a call/email about this and see what the costs are for shipping. Thanks so much for all the details, it looks quite "handy". msbel Posted August 15, 2010 Share #35 Posted August 15, 2010 Hate to say it again, but the only way you will personally know is to try it out. Return it if you don't like it. Just mounted mine today with Tony R. during a visit today, and jury is out for me.... Popflash does have them, and TR did say they were selling like mad. On the X1, the only thing that bothers me aesthetically is the noticeably raised hot shoe when compared to the scale of the camera's design. I hear Tim is going to make a hot shoe cover that you can slip in when you are not using the OVF, making it flush. As far as cases, it does NOT affect the A&A half case, which I use with a silk knotted cord. If you want to use the speed dial flush with the back of the camera, not really fluid. If you usually do it from the outward facing part of the dial, no problem at all. Aperture dial not affected at all. On my M8, as many have said, imperative. A must. As far as the Barnack argument, something tells me if they made these things back then, it would have been a hit

I noticed it as well, but it's only raised a couple millimeters. I slapped myself for being too picky. RichardM8 Posted August 16, 2010 Share #37 Posted August 16, 2010 Now we should be off to Luigi to get him to make a full case for the X1 with Thumbs Up. :-)
ChiILX1 Posted August 16, 2010 Author Share #38 Posted August 16, 2010 Just an update- I asked the creator if the thumbs up was supposed to already be brassing and he said no- that it should take at least a year, year and a half to start brassing. Before I could even ask he sent me a replacement and gave me a call! We determined that since I had the first from production with the new color finish that the finish wasn't completely "baked," as sometimes happens on the first few. He tested some he had in stock, determined it was just the first handful of the lot and I already have my free replacement 2 days later! I guess I just wanted to report back and say that the whole thing so far has been A+. Tim Isaac is a first class gent all the way.
LVSBB6 Posted August 23, 2010 Share #39 Posted August 23, 2010 I have the Thumbs Up and handgrip both attached to my X1, they work really well together and I high recommend.
phancj Posted August 23, 2010 Share #40 Posted August 23, 2010 At the risk of being really flamed all I use is a wrist strap and if the length is right there is no need for thumbs up, bulky handgrip, etc, etc??!! No?? Sorry, but that is my experience, I have been using the X1 for 6 months now and dont see how a handgrip or thumbs up can improve things. I have big hands (for my height at least haha:p) and with the wrist strap tight around and my hand against the right side of the X1 it is a very stable position...so never saw the need for a grip or thumbs up and add unwanted bulk. My two cents worth!
