Guest badbob Posted August 12, 2010 Share #41 Posted August 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I see all types of cameras for sale right after they come out... I wouldn't call it a reflection on the usuefulness of that camera... I mean, people sell top of the line Nikons, Canons, and even Leicas too... For long-term owner satisfaction, the X1 would have to compete with the better DSLR's on simplicity, size, and modest appearance -vs- flexibility, performance, and the photographer look, and so on. The X1 not only puts its owner in a small minority for the obvious things, but makes for a very lonely experience too. In an average week I see hundreds of people using DSLR's, and hundreds more with small P&S cameras. Nothing in common with what I'm doing. Maybe things would be different in London, Paris, or NYC, but in most other places, even in L.A., you'll be all alone.

JanCderidder Posted August 12, 2010 Share #42 Posted August 12, 2010 Don't forget the folk gradually coming from their M4's to digital, having skipped the Multi-Mega-here-I-am 3.6kg multi-lens line up, carry in a suitcase with wheels dslr club... people like me, not wishing to carry around tons of equipment, just something to slip in and out of ones pocket providing "OK" IQ and wondering what this digital hype is all about. Simple menus, equivalent to manual focus speed, good IQ, no built in spice racks and microwave ovens .... The X1 is a pretty good alternative. I have tried more, none to my satisfaction however... jsrockit Posted August 12, 2010 Share #43 Posted August 12, 2010 Maybe things would be different in London, Paris, or NYC, but in most other places, even in L.A., you'll be all alone. Yes, in NYC I do see other Leica users, but never another X1 user (especially on Wall St by the NYSE... I've seen foreigners / vacationers carrying two to three leicas around their necks at times). hahaha. However, people are intrigued by the X1 and I never got that when I went around with a Nikon D700. My M8 has made people stop, let me take my photo, then they tell me they only stopped because I had a Leica. Crazy.
msbel Posted August 13, 2010 Share #44 Posted August 13, 2010 Someone came up to me the other day effusing what a great camera I had tucked under my arm. He knew all the lingo and everything. Shame was he thought is was a M9, and then I realized he never even heard of the X1... LOL. Most people see me with the thing with an OVF and half case, and think it is a film camera, and start getting nostalgic. I turn it around, show them the LCD display, they are like, "oh".... r28551 Posted August 14, 2010 Share #45 Posted August 14, 2010 I think I bough a sizzling sausage. I have a 5D MK2 + kit but I just love this camera. I do think there is some cognitive dissonance going on. After spending sooooo much on a 'travel' camera that I don't really need, I feel that I SHOULD love it! That said, my external Voightlander VF and aged brown Luigi case I could just look at it all day. It's a think of beauty. Like Picasso, has the artist become a work of art?
