X1

Four shots taken with my new X1 (and my first Leica). Nothing serious here - just shots to help familiarize myself with the camera and its controls. The fixed lens certainly requires more effort when composing shots compared to a zoom, but I can see this being a pretty fun camera to shoot with. Color and sharpness are very good, and the AF performance, while not lighting fast, is still pretty good with the V2 firmware update. The first shot was manually focused, while the others were taken using AF. Low light performance of the X1 doesn't seem bad either.

1. Harry Grove Stadium, in Frederick, MD. The Frederick Keys baseball team (an Orioles single-A affiliate) plays here.

2. Point of Rocks, MD. The hills in the distance are on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, which divides Virginia and Maryland.

3. The is the actual bridge that crosses the Potomac at Point of Rocks, MD. Took this shot from inside my car.

4. One of the many hotels in the Frederick, MD area. I shot this one to test the low-light capabilities of the X1, and to also see how it would handle the colors of hotel lighting.

Don't want to be the party pooper, but there are rule to the dimension allowed for pictures on the Forum, which this violates quite violently. Won't be expecting it to stay on for much longer.

That said, it's quite a lovely portrait

Sorry, I did not know limits. How to delete a large photo or post?

Don't worry too much about it, I'm sure a mod will take it down soon enough. They like to keep the dimensions of the website consistent so it's optimized for viewing on all platforms. There's a thread about posting images on the forum, worth a read.

@Feudal1: I like your night shots, if I do not ask too much, any special setting or suggestion? Beside a good tripod, of course...

thanks

robert

Thanks. Nothing too special here - I basically made sure the camera was very steady, and took several shots in Manual Exposure mode (at ISO 100) to figure out the right combination of shutter speed and aperture to get the effect I wanted. The light balance indicator, which is displayed at the bottom of the screen when shooting in manual mode is also useful when trying to figure out the correct exposure. Just remember that when shooting in the dark at night, you usually need to increase the shutter speed a couple of notches, or stop down a bit, since the camera will try to balance the exposure for 18% grey, instead of the black of night.

I also used the timer (set to 2 seconds), so that any vibrations from me pressing the shutter would be gone by the time the camera actually took the shot. I used auto focus, with the AF mode set to Auto Focus, not AF-Macro (AF-Macro takes longer to lock on an object at distance, because it has to search for focus from 30cm to infinity. Regular AF only searches from 60cm to infinity).

The last thing I used - I used the Histogram (with clipping enabled in the menu) to judge the exposure during review of the shot, to make sure I didn't blow any highlights, and to generally make sure the exposure was what I wanted.
