In a few hours I'm off to Thailand for 3 weeks.

The first 'serious' outing with the X1 and I plan to put it through its paces big time. The X1, a few memory cards, a spare battery and the charger. That's it. Gosh I never traveled this light gear wise. Only a year ago this was big Lowe Pro bag with a Canon SLR, lenses & stuff. What a relief! :)

I hope to bring back some great images to share with you lot.

Cheers,

Richard.

Happy for you! You're lucky, I am going for work and will be there only a day and a half...will try to grab some shots i between work, probably try out some nite shots. You will love a trip with the X1, I brought it to India and loved it, feeling real light and happy....didnt need the spare battery though, but will still bring it just in case....have a great trip and happy shooting! :D

Hope you have a great trip!

I recently returned from a 2 week trip through Montreal and NYC with my X1 and spare battery. I took almost 4,000 shots and really don't remember a day where I had to reach into my back and get the spare battery. I simply rotated the batteries at the end of the day and put the used one to charge.

And I LOVED the light package. It was always on me and ready to shoot. Don't miss my DSLR one bit!

Anyway -- enjoy your trip!

Welcome to Thailand :)

BTW, the rain might disturb your trip this week here in Bangkok.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all,

I'm still in Thailand and just realized that I can access this forum with my Nokia smart-thingy too. :)

We have still one week to go on our 3 week trip. Thailand is an amazing and beautiful country. Friendly people and stunning, sometimes breathtaking scenery. Just like in a lot of other parts of Asia people are constantly trying to get your attention to sell you something. A little annoying sometimes but you get used to it too.

The climate is wearing me down a bit. This intense tropical moisty heat is somethng else. The only time I'm not sweating like crazy is when sitting still or when swimming. Pffff... :)

The X1 proofs to be a perfect travel companion. Coping far better with the conditions than I do. It works flawless. The brown leather case starts to look beautifully used, works quick'n easy and protects the camera pefectly (without the annoying lens hood). Battery life is a non issue. I have a 2nd with me but you really don't need it. AF is a non issue too. No probs whatsoever. Not once.

I can't wait to see my images back home!

Richard.

Oh I forgot to add, 'travelling light' with just the X1 sure beats lugging around my old'n heavy Lowe Pro bag stuffed with an SLR and lenses that you all 'need'... :-D

Love it !!

I must say that for some shots I feel a little uncomfortable to get close enough to people with the 35 lens. Something to work on/get used to 'cos when you do, the VOF is great.

The coconuts they sell by the roadside at 20 baht each is the best for "cooling" down..:D

In the mean time you can crop less and less until you are comfortable! I stuck a large camera in front of Sheriff Joe yesterday (didn't have the x1). He wasn't happy about it. Not the man to upset when you're an immigrant I suppose, but nothing came of it. Anyway, I just try to get closer and closer, and crop in the mean time. I rarely print anything, let alone large.

Richard -

I plan to visit Bangkok with my family during the third week of August. Primarily, for the temples and a days visit to the tiger temple run by monks.

Is Bangkok safe for visitors and are the sightseeing, tourist attractions open now?

Enjoy!!

Those places were closed just like 5 days during a month of protest period. And it's surely safe for travelers. :)

I recommend you to check the "Plern Wan" out, it is a place meant to be 1980's Thailand. It's in "Hua Hin", BTW.

We spend 2,5 days in Bankok when we arrived and we'll be there another 2 days when we get back next week. We (two adults and two children of 7 & 8) felt perfectly save everywhere we went. Day and night.

Bankok is one of the most amaz ing cities I've been to. Kind of a giant, steamy hot pressure cooker. Hectic, noisy and extremely dirty and smelly at places. But hugely fascinating. Highly recommended!
