jsrockit Posted July 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 23, 2010 Are there any retractable lens cameras with a hood? I've never seen one has anyone else?
leicaddict Posted July 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 23, 2010 Are there any retractable lens cameras with a hood? I've never seen one has anyone else? Well, the Sigma DP's have an accessory lens hood available. But on the X1, I don't think it would make sense. I've been shooting under bright sun all those days, without any reflection problems. So there is no need for a lens hood on a Leica X1, I'd say.
RichardM8 Posted July 24, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 24, 2010 So there is no need for a lens hood on a Leica X1, I'd say. Agree. The X1 lens is designed without a hood. It's very flare resistant. A hood usually increases contrast. This might be fine on a soft mediocre lens but on a good lens like the X1 has I can easily have an adverse effect. Sean Reid has done some interesting testing & observations on this too. When I used various L lenses on my Canon I frequently noticed unwanted effects from a hood. On the other hand, the small hoods from Zeiss primes for Canon work good. But they seem to be part of the design as they come with the lens.
therbert Posted July 24, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 24, 2010 I can't see how a hood could create a problem with imaging, unless it vignettes.
h00ligan Posted July 24, 2010 Share #6 Posted July 24, 2010 I live in the Senora Desert - to be honest I am surprised with this cam a hood is a non issue. I also shoot a lot at the worst times. You may be over thinking a problem that doesn't exist tbh.
JanCderidder Posted July 24, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted July 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's just a matter of normality for me. When I first started photography someone told me, or I read; always use a hood and never use a permanent filter etc. etc. (you all probably know the rap) So I always did just that .... Thanks for the comments about the non-need for a hood anyway, I shall go through life without one from now :-)
h00ligan Posted July 24, 2010 Share #8 Posted July 24, 2010 Well obviously some lenses need them! The x1 doesn't seem to.
Guest MartinMann Posted July 24, 2010 Share #9 Posted July 24, 2010 It fits, works and protects the lens, but it is cheap and it's not written LEICA on it For those who use the X1 as a tool and not like a statue, it's the Nikon adapter UR E8
jsrockit Posted July 26, 2010 Share #10 Posted July 26, 2010 MartinMann, I use my X1 often in bright sunlight and have yet to have any flare... so I would not assume that those of us who are opposed to adding a lens shade that cramps the X1's style simply do not use the camera. It could just be that the X1 doesn't need one generally.
Guest MartinMann Posted July 27, 2010 Share #11 Posted July 27, 2010 It is not only a Lens Hood, it is a protection too. So you don't have to shut it down always and put the Lenscap back on. My other stuff was a little bit ironic....

Also, does the Olympus VF1 have a centre dot or marking when you look thru it? I'm using a Voigtlander 35mm viewfinder and it only has the outer framelines. I'm finding it quite hard to estimate where is the focus point of my X1 using just the viewfinder (assuming I set it in camera to be at the centre, of course). Thanks
Guest MartinMann Posted July 29, 2010 Share #14 Posted July 29, 2010 @skide No vignetting with the Nikon adapter. You still could use it up to 60mm length without vignetting but the nikon is only around 45mm. Oly VF: After a couple of tests everything was fine. No Probs anymore Maybe this interesting for you too http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-zur-leica-x1/120680-x1-schnappies-mit-sucher.html#post1296911
Guest MartinMann Posted July 29, 2010 Share #15 Posted July 29, 2010 There is no centre dot in the VF only a frame which you can see if you follow the link in the upper post.

Looks like I have to practice more with my X1.

Do you know what size the threading is? My best guess is a 52mm thread, but I'm hesitant to order anything without verification.
craft Posted August 3, 2010 Share #18 Posted August 3, 2010 Those don't seem to be in stock anywhere. Do you know what size the threading is? My best guess is a 52mm thread, but I'm hesitant to order anything without verification. I found one of the Nikon UR-E8 tubes on eBay for about $10. The female threading where it connects to the body is 50mm. The other end is an odd 53.5mm male thread. (When used on the X1, the tube is mounted backwards from its original design.) I was even able to affix a piece from an old Nikon extension ring set, and I can now screw 52mm filters onto my X1! (That part is labeled as 'K2' and attached easily with some metal epoxy.) Many thanks to the person who originally posted the UR-E8 as a possibility. Welcome, dear visitor! Guest MartinMann Posted August 3, 2010 Share #19 Posted August 3, 2010 Many thanks to the person who originally posted the UR-E8 as a possibility. He told me in the German Forum: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-zur-leica-x1/132008-sonnenblende-x1-selbstbauprojekt.html#post1384992
JeTexas Posted August 3, 2010 Share #20 Posted August 3, 2010 Thanks guys. I ordered a UR-E8 on eBay. I'll probably glue an adapter with threads for 52mm filters on it as well.
