The LX5 is a small sensor camera that isn't comparable with the (one of the) best implementation(s) of an APS-C sensor currently available, the X1. The lens from the X1 will also be a lot better. Just to name the first two decisive factors. From a product positioning point of view the LX5 will - almost certainly - not match Panas' own GF1 either. Technically the much bigger m4/3 sensor will be superior to the small 1/1.63" sensor of the LX5. But this won't keep the LX5 from being one of the best P&S in its class (probably). Just like the LX3 was. Pana listened very good to their customers and reviewers as they seem to have addressed most of the wish-list and/or weak points from the LX3. A job well done imo. Unless the camera offers Canon s90 portability I can't see why one would choose micro sensor cameras going forward. Hopefully Nikon and Canon will jump into the APS-c point and shoot market soon. The thing that sets the small sensor cameras apart from Leicas is the long zoom. I keep a pocket size Canon SX210 handy when I want a 400 mm reach. And no amount of image quality on the part of a large sensor can compensate for a decent 400 mm lens when that's the requirement to shoot something small and far away. The future of the mft sensor is in the size of something like the lx5 with fixed lens imho. With all the asp-c mirrorless plans coming, mft interchangeable (pen/gf1 like) is limited I think. Sony missed it on interface and lenses.. canon and nikon won't. Without serious advancement in the noise aspect of mft, I don't see it surviving a big three release of similar form factor with asp-c.. whereas cramming that sensor into a compact with moderate zoom as a fixed lens - could be quite a good feat. This was something I evaluated before deciding to invest in mft glass - I think it's a nice sensor, but it's a stop gap imo. We just don't need smaller than asp-c at this point, unless it's in a truly pocketable camera. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I agree and I was thinking in terms of pocketability... but I'm ok with u4/3 as a stop gap for now since nobody has even accomplished that in pocketable form.
