Scratched screen cover !! Advices please

What I did was to put my X1 together with M9 and some lenses in my back pack, with padding of course. But it was a long walk and the padding got lose so X1 came in contact with one of the lenses (which are not made of plastic ).

Plastic LCD cover got badly scratched and back plastic panel (where the buttons are embedded) is scratched too.

Does anybody knows can I replace the plastic screen cover, as I used to be able to do with some of the Canon SRLs, or it has to go to Leica for repairs ?

That's a real bummer. I would be surprised if you could source either an oem or 3rd party replacement without involving Leica. :/ sorry to hear of the trouble!

Well, I think that I have to contact Leica. The camera works, no problems, but every time I take it out I can see the scratches and it drives me insane

Does Zagg make an Invisible Shield for the X1? Has anyone tried using it? Sorry about your scratches, Jelico. Hopefully when you get it fixed, you'll find a protector for your screen.

There was talk of the LCD Screen being of strengthened plexiglass.

All I know is that plastic shirt buttons cause minor scratches as the camera hangs from my neck.

Zagg may not, but you could order a blank sheet for a lot less money for the same product from bestskinsever.com

 

However, I'm not sure I want to use that on a camera - maybe the acmaxx hard shield though... ?

well i already have a 3M screen protector for the X1 here in my desk and i dont even own the camera yet, The first thing i do is apply a screen protector and buy a decent leather case for it, i mean in general for all products i need to touch often like Iphones etc..

 

 

Well, if the scratches on the screen are not too deep u can try to polish them away with one of those cell phone screen repair Kits. But i would send it back for repairs and then apply a screen protector A clean screen is also much better when u sell that thing in a few years for the X2

The real bummer is that I bought clear sheet of plastic cover which needed to be cut to size. But that wouldn’t protect the camera from rubbing on summicron 35/2 focusing lever which has quite sharp edges.

I am now looking for something more resistant….

I've just been online and bought an Acmaxx LCD Protector.

 

The marks on my LCD are very minor ( some might say almost invisible ) but I'm thinking of polishing them out before applying the protector.

My question is .... does anyone know if the top surface is coated?

 

Clearly I don't want to rub a coating off

I know that if you contact Zagg and give them the exact measurements of your screen in centimeters, they will make an Invisible Shield for it. This is what I plan on doing when I get my X1. I have an Invisible Shield on the LCD screen of my iPod and the iPod still looks new after 3 years.

I bought one and it works well and is not noticeable. I would always avoid any camera or lens jostling together in a bag, if at all possible.

The best thing I've used for screens like that is conventional toothpaste, the kind that has a mild abrasive in it. It works wonders on some watch dials, but I can't guarantee it would work with a X1 screen - it might even damage it. I take the toothpaste with a minimum amount of water for moistening and work it in slowly. Don't get the screen wet - just moisten the toothpaste a little.

David, I used to be high and mighty on zagg, but if you want to go the film route, there are much better options either for a) less expensive more clear c) less orange peel

 

I still advocate films most of the time, but for the x1 I just ordered the GGS protector (as well as one for my 7d). On ebay I think it was $12 for both. Zagg is REALLY overpriced for what it is at this point.. they aren't any better than bestskinsever.com (1/4 the price and easier to apply) and I think Ghost armor is a better product(quality). For even more choices power support is the way to go (ipad matte screen is a must imho due to glare issues unless using the ipad in the dark!)

This may sound strange, but another substance that can be used as a very fine polish is cigar or cigarette ash. This is even finer than toothpaste, is very gentle, and can be used to polish out the smallest of scratches.

I am now waiting patiently for my Leica X1 to arrive. I want to protect the screen and I have only used the Invisible Shield in the past. I like them to be thin and invisible. How is Ghost Armor and the GGS Protector better products? Incredibly too, my MacBook has been crashing and Apple is replacing it with a MacBook Pro! I want to protect the underside of the MacBook Pro and I don't know what product to use.

i have the same but i did not know that its available in the US, i thought only in germany. The best manufactor is with no doubt Brando but they dont have screen protectors for the X1.

i honestly wouldnt use this, i tried it once just for fun on a old scratched CD and the result was a total milky surface with million scratches while the special CD polish left a mirror like surface. 5$ for that paste is worth it for a 2000$ camera.

I don't think you would ever want to use an abrasive on a CD.

But glass if different - with scratches on glass you're not necessarily filling them in, you're removing some glass around them.

The nasty thing about polishing plastics is that there are so many different types of plastic requiring different abrasives/polish. I'd be more than a little reserved to try that on the X1 LCD...
