For the theatre and spectacle, BH Photo is a must, plus they have everything you could possible want and their prices are great. For a good discussion and demonstration of Leica equipment, I would go with Kurland (and the Leica Gallery is in the same building).

I've never traveled to Tamarkin in Connecticut and I would call first, but if you have the time you might also want to visit Tamarkin Camera. He used to have a New York outlet, but not anymore. He has a great reputation (an observation based on comments of others more than personal experience). But before you go to the effort, call and check out the web site.

Unfortunately, B&H carries very little in the way of new Leica stock. In fact they are the poorest retail ouftit for anything Leica. Yes, the have a world of cameras, but not much either new or used of Leica origin. Their prices for used Leica bodies are absurd. Quite honestly, I've NEVER met with anyone in the whole store that has even a modicum of knowledge about Leica. I have witnessed people attempting to buy IR cut filters or other ordinary items come close to tears with the absence of any satisfaction from the fungible staff. Kurland is well stocked with exquisite used equipment, but the prices are high, in line with the quality of the items. The best way to shop is with Ken Hansen. He has or can get almost anything & it's always top draw. He has an enormous inventory, but sells from his apartment on the Upper East Side. If you want his email & phone number, PM me.

Agree with Photovillage, but not open on Saturday during the summer, depending on what day you are coming to NYC.

A few blocks away from Photovillage I can also highly recommend Fotocare on 22nd Street between 6th and 5th Ave. I believe they are open on Saturday during summer, and the staff is equally terrific and they have a great selection of film.

Def' get to Leica Gallery on Broadway. Then get out and take some pictures!

Many thanks to all for the advise. I haven`t yet the date of my trip (I guess I will fly the last August week), but as I will remain in NYC for a whole week, I will have enough time for visit all the shops you suggested me, and, of course, the Leica Gallery. Last week I was in Meister Camera Hamburg shop. It is a nice shop, a little smaller than the Meister Berlin shop, and not so close to the city center. I bought there an S 2 neck strap, the only S 2 item that I can afford now.:p Maybe in the future, the camera will follow it... Prices were a little high, specially in used items. BTW, in the same trip I bought an Elmarit 28 lens brand new for E 200 less than the official price in Vico shop, in Kiel City, at the North of Germany, on the Baltic Sea.

Leica just open a Leica Boutique inside Willoughby s on 5th avenue. Since they are new you may find a good selection of new items and accessories. They opened in June and Leica normally stocks the new stores well.

If you want something specific you should call around but be aware that Leica has not adjusted their prices for the decline in the euro and they are about 15-20% higher than europe.(without VAT). Used prices are still better in the US but not always at the dealers.

Let me clarify my comment regarding B&H. B&H is a beehive of activity and is fun to walk around just to see all the goings on. If you know what you want (like SD cards and other things that don't require a demonstration), the prices are great. But it is not the place I would go if I wanted personal attention and questions answered. Since Leica stuff is generally not discounted, you might as well go with a dealer who can answer questions, follow-up when there are problems, and provide high quality customer service. Kurland is that type of dealer.

Ben & Sanyasi are correct about B&H having just a modicum of Leica equipement. However, Sanyasi's B&H customer service experience is out of date. About three years ago they made a radical change, and offer rather good, well informed help. It certainly makes it a better experience than in the past.

¿15-20% higher than in Europe? But VAT is higher in Germany than in US, so the difference may not be so big, after all.

I was in B & H about 9 months ago. Yes, they answered questions and I have nothing against them. However, you que for the questions, there is a rushed feeling when there are lots of people in line, and the layout is not good for testing equipment. This is why I use them for more commodity like goods--paper, ink, memory cards.

On the other hand, when I went to Kurland, I was one of two people in the place for over an hour. I was able to take the M9 and do test shots while the manager was off doing other things, but he was available to answer questions and did so. Its all about choice. I just found the Kurland experience much more personal. And when the camera I received broke after 2 days, I worked with the same person who sold me the camera. And when I wanted to buy a lens, I got advice from that same person. Anyone who wants to buy Leica gear from B & H doesn't create a problem for me. I just like working with the same person, who generally is the one who answers the phone when I call. Also, if the stuff isn't discounted, why not go for the more personal experience.

But everybody should do as they please.

If you live in Argentina, you can reclaim your VAT as you leave Europe. You need to have your receipts and fill out forms but with the high VAT in some countries it is worth it. In fact it is high in all of those that i know so just go ahead and claim.

My office is very close to Grand Central Terminal, so perhaps we can meet.

Among the shops you might want to try are: www.photovillage.com, www.kurlandphoto.com/, www.bhphotovideo.com/, www.cameralandny.com.

There are others, but this should do.

Many thanks for your answer. I will be in Manhattan from August 23 till August 28 in the Holiday Inn Express Hotel at 13W 45th Street. But as my wife arrives on August 26 (my 69th birthday), my only really free :-) days will be from 23 to 25. If you have some free time to meet me, be patient because my English isn´t too good.

With kindest regards,

Hector
