glenwells Posted January 1, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, My first posting so please forgive me if there is a protocol I am missing. Very briefly, I have a Canon G7 but saw the V-Lux 1 and thought it would be a camera better suited to my desire to do more fun/creative photography. I really want to love the V-Lux 1 but at the moment I am struggling with it for reasons that I hope are apparent in the comparison shots. What I would like is to know if I am doing anything to contribute to the issues with the V-Lux and can they be corrected. Both sets of pics are on standard settings Program mode F2.8 but the Canon G7 has shutter speed of 1/60, the V-Lux 1/30 on the indoors shots. The V-Lux 1 seems to choose slower shutter speeds in general compared to the Canon G7 why would this be? All pictures are unedited. Anyway, the crops are from full/actual size pictures. I have to say that I do not think that looking at my pictures at full size is 'pixel peeping' as it is where a camera shows its true ability in my opinion. The issues I have problems with are the smeared areas and the lack of sharpness/focus in the V-Lux pictures. The noise setting is normal when lowered it reduces the smeared effect somewhat but obviously this is at the cost of increased noise. Both pictures were taken back to back under the same conditions. I have some more that compare to these for example compared pictures on my decorated christmas tree. on the V-Lux there seems to be a lack of focus/sharpness and detail seems to get blurred out. Finally in defence on the V-Lux the issue does not appear to be noticeable at closer ranges such as up to 2 meters. The pictures are in order of G7 then V-Lux. Iam not slating the V-Lux I really want to love it and hope I can correct the issues. Regards and looking forward to comments and advice.

Riley Posted January 1, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 1, 2007 i know from experience that the FZ and by inherritance the v-lux cameras have a wonderful lens resolution, anyone can see that in the images they render, the favourite tho is the FZ20 they also have nicely accessible manual modes, and simple control the later types having manual zoom and focus the canon G7 is a real menu plugger, maybe because it has a lot of features but it has a few nice components the iso control wheel on the top deck is something all cameras should adopt canon has a really effective, easy to use panoramic mode it also has excellent movie mode in comparison, the competing features/deficiencies are the lenses and the noise no question the v-lux/fz cameras are noisy, the practical limitation is iso200 the canon will make iso400, maybe 800 if you are either lucky or you work on it but the lens is given to fringing and edge clarity just isnt there when you peep the pixels

johnastovall Posted January 1, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 1, 2007 The G7 has one unforgivable flaw, no RAW capture.
Riley Posted January 1, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 1, 2007 yes, and its more of a standalone point and shoot, for someone who might not have a dSLR where the V-Lux is a bridging camera, between point and shoot ans dSLR not really the same category

tommycrown Posted January 3, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 3, 2007 About G7? Yes, No Raw completely threw me out of even thinking of G7, however, it is P&S size-wise. Vlux 1 is more like what they call, "Prosumer" camera. I am with Riley.. different category. If you don't want to work with editing, then buy G7 maybe for lower noise level, easy snapshot jpegs, but if you do enjoy creative photography, Vlux 1/Fz50 will be an excellent camera! For image attachment, when you hit "Reply" on the bottom of everyone's previous replies, scroll down to attiditional options, then you will see the second box called "Attach Files" Click the "Manage Attachments". It will guide you through it! Tommy ________________ There are many things for us to click, why not your camera shutter?
glenwells Posted January 4, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted January 4, 2007 Hi, apologies to those that took the time to read my posting. I have now posted some crops form full sized pics using both the V-Lux 1 and the Canon G7 on: Flickr: Photos from glenwells I would appreciate advice on improving my use of the V-Lux 1 and comments on the comparisons shots (details on shooting spec etc on the first message but they are effectively the same). Raffaela Posted January 17, 2008 Share #11 Posted January 17, 2008 Dear Glen, your post it's a bit old, so i don't know if this teply can be useful to you but i can totally relate to everything you say. I recently bought a V-Lux and truly would love to learn how to appreciate it but i have exactly the same problems: - it looks the shutter speed is much lower than average in same light conditions - 100% enlargements seems to dramatically lack in details, focus and sharpness, sometimes even 50% enlargements - macro works ok, but landscapes looks really blurred, like the camera "paints" the details instead of taking a picture i read the answers people gave you and i think none was a real answer; we all know that reflex are a different class, but i have had better results (sharpness related) with a Canon Ixus than with the V-lux and this is NOT normal. I'm very interested to know if you have solved these problems in the meantime and how. I'd love to keep the camera, i tried many diferent settings, but so far the results have been really depressing, no matter if i shoot RAW or Jpg, keeping the iso strictly at 100... Any input would be appreciated. Many thanks Raffaela PS there's a girl on Flickr called VELOCITY GIRL (http://www.flickr.com/photos/velocity_girl/), she works with a V-Lux and the focus and sharpness are perfect. I wrote her to ask her about enlargements and she says she has no problems at all. I'm staring wondering if we have been unlucky and bought a camera with fabric faults.... jaylange Posted January 18, 2008 Share #12 Posted January 18, 2008 I checked out your shots on flickr and am strugglng to see the differences in sharpness and clarity. Being brand new to Digistal Photography [having rented a D80 this past weekend from Samy's Camera while I was in Los Angeles], I am still a novice. I need to know if the V-Luxe is a twin of the Panasonic/Olympus DMC-FZ8. Is it? Jay
rob_x2004 Posted January 18, 2008 Share #13 Posted January 18, 2008 The G7 has one unforgivable flaw, no RAW capture. Apparently it is very easy to break in to. Or it was when I was looking into the G7.
