I have kids too and that definitely could happen. Keep it in perspective. The reality is that many worse things can happen. Although expensive these things can be replaced. Best of luck. Keep us posted.

Well after reading this thread I am never, ever going to go to this place called Redacted! Do people get abducted in Redacted? Are there crimes enacted in Redacted? Do ladders get retracted in Redacted? Perhaps wisdom teeth even get impacted in Redacted. I really don't think they've cracked it in Redacted and they have every right to be distracted in Redacted.

 

No, I will spend my holidays in Replaced because I know there's no crime there.

An M9 with a new Noctilux is the equivalent of a Rolex Daytona or so.

 

Would you ever let a Rolex on the table, even for seconds? Anywhere? Would you travel with a Rolex? Thats probably the net income of a year, or more, for many people, even in the western world. Don't take me wrong, this is not an excuse for whatever, but honestly, this story sounds so strange for me (I read this thread only now, so i don't know where it happened, but it could happened anywhere).

Exactly. Up until about a decade or so ago, I myself made less than about $6,000/year, so I completely understand the surreal nature of this event (if someone told me I would lose in one evening what I had not even made in my entire life until that point, I would find it quite difficult to believe).

 

Having said that, one does have to put down the camera to eat? or help the kids. I have taken measures to limit the stuff I have with me so I don't forget anything else elsewhere (not forgetting the camera, but other things like books, phones etc. are still in the same category). I now have a system of counting everything I walk into any place with and then counting when I leave. Just become very cautious after this.

 

Also, once again, I thank everyone for the nice thoughts and feedback. I am also a little bit disappointed by the strange posts with conjecture about validity of my claims, I simply don't see what one has to gain from lying about such a matter and while the world and Internet is full of strange characters, I can somewhat understand the reluctance on someone's part to accept whatever I say as truth but to go ahead and actually put such thoughts on paper and in essence accusing a fellow Leica enthusiast of lying openly, I don't understand that part. Anyway, I replied to your post because I share some of this feeling myself and having come from a really humble background, I am dumbfounded that I can make such a mistake, but such is life.

You seem to have the support of the majority of posters. The suspicions seem a little strange and must be due to sour grapes. I guess we'd all like to be able to afford a new set... jealousy I get; vindictiveness I don't. I am a complete Walter Mitty when it comes to the stuff and mixed with the fact that I'm not precious about my cameras means I fully empathise with your situation. On eBay a few years ago a guy left his M8 behind in a pub. He posted details of the pub with the date and time on eBay with the promise of a reward no questions asked. Don't know if that worked.

 

I've got a separate camera policy because I know what I'm like....

Faraz, you still have not answered my question about how Samy's helped you. I emailed them asking about expected availability, as they still list the M9 as out of stock, and they have not even bothered to answer the email.

 

BTW, have you reported the theft to the police? It may well be sitting in their property office. Provided you haven't claimed the loss on insurance, you may be the owner of two M9 outfits.

See, this I really don't understand. If I were in your place, I would not have even left the restaurant until the police had arrived and taken statements. How can you expect them to take the issue seriously if you go back to them 3-4 weeks after the event.

 

According to your own words you come from a modest background and yet you seem to place very little value on your equipment.

 

Maybe I'm wrong, and I apologize in advance if I am, but your whole nonchalant attitude about the situation is quite strange. And by the way I think your english is excellent so I don't think there's any misunderstanding.

Thanks, believe me I can understand having second thoughts about something like this, I mean sometimes, even I don't think I have registered the shock of this event myself and I appreciate you raising this politely. Not much I can do to prove anything to you or anyone else for that matter so I will leave it at that.

 

As for Samy's, that part is even more unbelievable because this would be the second time they have been able to come up with an M9 for me.

 

I bought my original one from them as well and they were able to locate one for me back then very quickly as well. This is what happened: I didn't actually approach them myself but rather a friend of mine who is a professional photographer and spends quite a bit of his professional budget with them got them to contact me for the original purchase. Second time around, I only had to call in with the details of my ordeal and they made it happen based on their relationship with the professional photographer who originally put me in touch with them. As I said, a combination of luck and a lot of courtesy on their part. Hope this makes sense.

just a tip for your next trips:

 

Keep the strap around a leg, or an arm or something that is big enough and difficult enough to carry away. Hide it in a bag, and to the same with the bag: turn a strap around something ..........

Attach the camera securely to your kids. They are not as easy to replace.

Seems that the price of a M9 and Noctilux would constitute "Grand Theft" which is a felony ... at least in most US jurisdictions. That's a big difference from Petty Larceny.

 

 

I had a very similar experience a few years ago while traveling. I left a M7 and 35/1.4 ASPH slung over a chair (in a case) and left without it. About 1/2 hour later, realizing my error, I ran back to the restaurant full speed to find it gone and the staff indifferent ... BUT when I clearly wasn't going to give up, one of the staff piped up that a guy in back had found something and put it a closet. Maybe my camera? It was.

 

On the other hand I once shot a wedding at a restaurant locally, and left a Canon 135/2L on a window ledge and completely forgot it was there ... and in the wedding rush never realized it was missing ... until packing for the next wedding a month later ... I called ... the manager had it waiting on his desk, and refused any reward.

 

I feel insurance companies are how the mob went legit. : -)

 

You pay for protection, and they find any excuse to not pay a claim. IMO, theft is theft ... whether due to creating an opportunity out of forgetfulness, or not. I guess a merchant that places items on display is asking for theft also ...

 

I now have all my stuff covered by a "studio business" policy ... but get this ... if I lose something to a thief or damage while shooting a non-paying job, it is not covered. If I had it covered under a Home Owners rider, any paying use would not be covered.

 

A Pro Photographer friend of mine was on vacation and was robbed of his cameras at gun point. The claim was denied because he wasn't working for pay. I was shooting a wedding for a friend and damaged an expensive camera that was specifically listed under a rider on my homeowner's policy that was represented as all inclusive. The claim was denied because the friend gave me $50. for supplies.
