What means the "Re." engraving ?

I concur with pop and harryzet above, the most logical explanation is that Re. is simply an abbreviation for the long German word 'Registraturnummer', inventory number or code in English. That does not explain the 'Z', however. That could be a code for a certain unit or department within the military or civil organization which applied the inventory number.

Thank you Andy, now we have three (four with me) believing that a good starting point for Re. meaning is 'Registraturnummer' word.

Who gives an advise to the various smart sellers ;)?

Just a suggestion : why not Re for Repariert ?

Z is may be for zahlen, one of signification for this word can be : adjusted;

This Z il also on II, III, IIIa shutter speed knob for time to be adjusted by yourself = B on the later models.

I think both "repaired" (Repariert) and "zahlen" rather unlikely.

I see no need for numbering repair jobs. If it's broken, you fix it. It will be the same device. Also, what would the number be if something is repaired more than once?

"zahlen" is a German verb and means "to pay". I can think of no reasonable scenario where one would mark an expensive piece of equipment as "being paid for" or even "yet to be paid for".

The letter "Z" could be used to group a number of inventory items at or near the end of an inventory listing. I have been known to apply some numbering schemes for exactly this end.
