MEB Posted June 17, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I stopped at a store this morning on the way to work. The store was next to a wooded pond. This family of Sandhill Cranes walked in front of my car as I scrambled to get out my camera and change to the longest lens I have for the Leica...a 75mm ASPH. These birds are enormous...they are about 1.6 to 2 meters tall at the head. One of them leaned over to look at me through the window of the car as they passed by me. They were very cooperative as long as I didn't get out of the car. All of these were taken through the passenger window of the car. In one you see an angry redwing blackbird (an Oriole?) actually attacking one of the cranes. He did this several times not realizing that the crane was at least 25 times bigger than he! These are all cropped at close to 100%. M9/75 cron. LR 3 with NIK Sharpener. Thanks for looking, Mark Blumer
Advertisement Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Hi MEB, Take a look here Big Bird and his Family. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
DSchmidt Posted June 17, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 17, 2010 I really like the last shot Mark. You should try to do some vignetting and bring back the highlights a bit. It may look even better! Perhaps something like this...
stuny Posted June 18, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 18, 2010 Mark - Delightful, and the chicks make for a solid "Aw!" moment. I too like the last, but it would be stronger for me (all of them I suspect) with a slight increase in shadow slider, which will intensify the color and contrast. However, I prefer the last without Dave's vignetting -- In spite of the fact that I'm often in awe of Dave's shots and processing. BTW: The small bird is probably trying to distract the cranes from its nest.

MEB Posted June 21, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted June 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you all for the kind comments. It is not often that one gets such a surprise opportunity but it is the reason that I never go anywhere without my camera within reach. Dave, I did vignette a little for the prints that I made from these photos and it really focused the subject. Thank you for the hint. Mark
