Firmware is on its way !?

Frank, can you name one company in the entire world that has ever upgraded a discontinued model?

Maybe Frank cannot, but Kodak offered a completely new sensor upgrade for their first full-frame Nikon mount digital DCS Pro14n. I beleive it was under $2k for the upgrade which made it essentially the same as the replacement model, the Kodak Pro SLR/n!

If I am not mistaken, this was the first full-frame digital Nikon mount camera body.

I am not saying Leica must follow in those footsteps, but it certainly proves that upgrades, even serious ones such as a completely new sensor and electronics to run it, are not impossible. What buried Kodak was not lack of innovation (they produced the first pro digital cameras) or customer service, but rather a lack of marketing and inability to bring to market certain things that other manufacturers could.

Except that in the case of the DCS Pro SLR/n it was neither a completely new sensor nor a complete revamp of the electronics, but a rather conservative improvement of either component.

Not to mention that Kodak gave up on their DSLR line after that model. Not exactly a success story if you ask me.

According to the release notes, Leica only addressed the 'shutter fault' problem. Well, that's finally fixed then. Personally, I never had this happen because I shoot with the M8 like with the M3 - one photo at the time, and 36 a day, maximum :D.

Moreover, contrary to the statement in the release notes, my profiles were still there.

Chris M has gone very quiet on the M8 firmware issue ;)

Never say "never" :)

Andy, surely as a moderator you can edit the posts to show that we all accepted and placed substantial bets with Chris M? ;)

Has anyone mentioned yet that they've noticed lower noise at higher ISOs?

Mine makes the same noise at all ISOs.

The thought had crossed my mind ;)

Seriously, given his adamant stance that a firmware upgrade was never going to happen, "period", even a small donation to the LUF Charity might be a nice idea - he was after all, prepared to risk $10,000 on his "knowledge".

on the contrary dearest,Kodak as one of the most advanced sensor developers became very successful by selling the sensors and remove the weight from the company of developing and marketing an slr-an area that Kodak had no previous experience. Why compete with her best clients.

And what has this got to do with the DCS Pro SLR 14n and SLR/n, neither of which employed Kodak CCDs? Kodak’s CCD sensor business and their DSLR business had always been largely independent. For their FF DSLRs, Kodak did rely on third-party CMOS sensors developed by FillFactory in Belgium (the sensors of the SLR 14n and SLR/n were manufactured by Tower Semiconductor in Israel and X-FAB in the UK, respectively, as FillFactory didn’t have their own fab). Kodak’s main contribution to the sensor in the SLR/n was its absorption-based IR cut filter, replacing the dichroic filter of the sensor in the SLR 14n.

Angelos,

Do yourself a favor and put this guy on your ignore list like I did some time ago - he can never be wrong and will argue with anyone foolish enough to respond to his posts!

My original response was to someone else on this thread discussing Leica and M8 upgrades. I stated that updates and even upgrades are not unheard of with Kodak (the developer and supplier of Leica M sensors) as an example. I guess it did not take him long to twist things into another opportunity to get up on his soapbox.
