Hi guys,

When I focus my 25 to infinity through the vf, the patch still shows some slight double image for objects very far away. It feels as if I should turn the lens further for it to be in focus, but obviously this is not possible. The images come out fine, and it's not that big of a problem, but I was just wondering if anybody could explain what this is and how I could fix it.

Thanks,

Kyle

Jaap- I haven't checked yet but I think it is just this lens.

Bill-I believe it is the newest version of the snapshot, which is an m mount. I'm not sure if thy call it snapshot anymore, but I'm pretty sure it's the same lens besides the m mount.

Thanks,

Kyle

If it's the M version then it should certainly couple. Did you buy it new, and have you another body to try it on? Maybe take it to a dealer and see if they will let you put it on one of their bodies?

Regards,

Bill

This question was raised at the recent Leica M9 Roadshow (Dallas, Texas)...someone (a fellow M8 owner) asked about this and the Leica Reps said it was normal (sorry, forgot the reason they gave)...hope this helps alleviate any concerns (btw most of my lenses 3 Leica, 1 CV, do this as well).

As mentioned above the lens, or rangefinder linkage, is probably slightly out of adjustment. You should make sure your pictures are acceptably sharp at infinity.

It's so common, it is probably "within tolerance" of the manufacturing and adjustment.

I would take that bet. There is enough variation in both cameras and lenses out of the factory, I think, that they are probably both off a little. When a lens seems perfect it can also be the errors cancelled.

I find about 1/3 of my lenses hit the stop too soon, which holds true across several cameras.

That is not the issue. The RF patches don't coincide when the lens is focussed to infinity. That is,disregarding the more esoteric causes, either the RF coupling or the lens helicoid. As it is just this lens doing this, it is clear that the lens is at fault. So fingers away from therangefinder adjustment. Trying to adjust infinity as DIY will in many cases throw out near and middle distance focussing and make all other lenses unmatched to the body. If the lens must be adjusted it is a job for a qualified technician. It probably needs both the flange distance and the optical cell positioning reshimmed. Does it matter for taking images? If the user is satisfied with the focussing: no.
