Maybe I'm missing something... is there a way to activate this, or not possible?

 

The reason I ask is that I feel in many situations, the noise advantage is sort of moot.. because... Iso 800 on the x1 is very similar to iso 640 on the GF1. Let's assume we go with the standard rule of inverse focal/shutter (sorry, don't know the actual name) - because we are dealing with 1/30 to 1/60 jump on ss, to be SURE we turn out sharp (bear in mind both held at arm's length - i bet using ovf would allow 1/30 confidently just due to posture and holding the cam) whereas the gf1 needs 1/40, but in doing some testing tonight, the x1 and gf1 seem to calculate exposure quite differently. Where at 1/30 / 2.8 / 800 was shown as dead on with the x1 the gf1 said 1/40 / 2.8 / 640 was dead on for the gf1.

 

So we have a couple of choices.. keep the iso at 400 1/30 underexposing and trying to recover, or use 800 to 'get it right' which means any noise advantage over the gf1 is lost. Similar results with 1600 vs 1250.

 

I'm happy to post a couple crops to show what I mean if necessary.. maybe I'm missing something there.

 

Thoughts? Am I figuring this wrong? It seems to me that the noise advantage then would be relatively overstated given what the camera sees as proper exposure.

 

both series of shots appeared correctly exposed, the x1 moreso in jpg... still having that weird case of raw seeming overexposed whilst jpg looks better, mentioned in another thread.

BTW, most shots for me at 1/30 turn out just fine, i'm not THAT wobbly just occasionally when not taking my time enough... anyway.

Not sure if I read your question correctly, but isn't the EV +/- button (above the menu button) supposed to do this?

a-ha! It only works like that when you set aperture or shutter to auto.. , not in full manual.. got it! Thanks man.

Yes, in manual mode, you do this manually.

Well, you can't do the same thing manually, it's impossible. There's nothing between 30 and sixty...whereas using ev I can get 1/40 or 1/50. That's where I was confused.

You are right, it seems you can only change the aperture from 1/3rds

This is reallyonly an issue in low light, where one may wish to underexposed by a third stop to get a bit back in speed. When the aperture is wide open and iso set to say 1600 and 3200 is not desired, min shutter speed set to 1/30, but you want something a wee faster. I'm just feeling a dunce that I didn't figure out to put ss in a then hit the ev compensation button which changes behavior at that point.
