Fully agree and neither do statements like: "........I can tell you that from my first hand experience the MF on the NEX with manual lenses is far easier than the MF on the M8. ........", help credibility.

Yup, thats for sure. I have not tried MF on the Nex yet, but tried both the kit lenses with AF.

For the M8, I just tried 2 days ago and I must say for a newbie, out of the over dozen shots I took at the used camera store ALL are in perfect focus except for one shot. It was easy even for a first timer, but my concern is if I take photos by MF all day, given my poor eyesight I think it will be a strain, so I like to have an option to use AF all the time except in certain difficult lighting conditions. I cannot picture my self doing MF for 600 shots a day!

M8 focusses just like an M6... easy fast and clear because of the viefinder. I tried MF on the nex, and even the display being nice and sharp and such I have trouble focussing it. Once/if an EVF comes out it will change matters for sure, as for now, I like the AF with the zoom lens.

I can focus at f1.4 with success on the NEX screen in regular view, but I do occasionally miss. At 7x magnification, shots are always in focus.

I guess it varies by the person and the person's eye sight as far as MF speed and accuracy go. I have owned the GF1 with EVF and the GXR with EVF and the GH! with built in EVF. While the EVF's helped for MF the choice of magnification and the lack of high contrast along with other issues (for example in the GXR like the X1, irrespective of f-stop selected the lens f-stop changes with the lighting making precise focusing more difficult), non are as easy to me as the NEX. In low light, seeing the range finder patches was very difficult and for me, at least, I tend to get a double image making it really hard to find the precise focus at night. I admittedly don't have great vision and my presbyopia has gotten worse with age. I had laser surgery ten years ago and I think that contributes to certain high contrast night ghosting images. The very bright and high contrast LCD on the NEX helps me a lot so I am faster with it, especially when magnified to 14x though I can see the focus point without magnification. With manual lenses I am holding the focus ring on the lens and it is natural and quick. I find it works well at waist level because that is effectively helping my presbyopia by shifting into the are where I need less magnification. I never tried diopter correction on the M8 but did use the 1.35x which helped with longer lenses but at the cost of not letting me see the full frame lines with wider lenses. Another big advantage with Leica lenses is no issue of front or back focus since what you see is what you get. No mechanical alignment issues.

I havent given up hope with the nex , really , not yet. I do enjoy my X1 right now more than any other camera. If superb E-lenses really do materialized it may be a game changer for me. But right now there is no way in hell I am using that camera with the kit lenses, no matter what.

I really, really hope Sony will not hold back the nex development to keep the alphas afloat. From cam delaers they told me they are selling a lot of nex, at the expense of sony dslrs.

I saw some photos with a NEX-5 and a Zeiss Juno 75mm lens (can't remember the mount but not leica) last weekend and they were beautiful. If sony (or zeiss) comes out with some AF lenses in the proprietary mount for this camera, it could be a winner.

All I know is what lightroom stated ...it is on our list of upgrades. ......... maybe I will get a Gf1 just to piss phancie and his buddies off and post X1 killer images:D c/o panasonic

........... maybe I will get one because they are cheap and work fine as cameras instead. Sony are a weird company neither hot nor cold, promise a heap on paper but fall short when the goods are put into use but the make great televisions

Precisely what I have been saying all along, the cam is superb, just a desperate need for good lenses, AF ones. Not sure if Sony will knowingly kill their alpha line though, as a more developed nex will probably do IMHO.

Does it correct the problem that it is a piece of crap?

(disclaimer: based on word of mouth and not actual use) ;)

The little 16mm Sony lens is outstanding for a tiny wide angle. The main complaints with the 16mm are slight CA and distortion, and that is more or less fixed with the LR3 profile (Panasonic does this automatically with their 20mm 1.7 in camera.) Sharpness in the center third of the frame with the Sony 16mm is EXTREMELY sharp. The optimum aperture of the 16mm is around f5.6, and the optimum aperture of the X1 is around f8. You'll see that the 16mm has a sharper center, and the extreme corners of the X1 are a bit sharper. Crop the 16mm to the same focal length equivalent of the X1, and the corner advantage disappears. All in all, considering that the 16mm is a much wider angle and very small and inexpensive, it is a pretty remarkable little lens. Check out this detailed comparison:

Sorry Douglas but I tried the 16mm at launch and the sharpness is way off the X1's , could be a bad sample I dunno but my experience is totally contrary to yours.

Maybe you tried one of the pre-production lenses that Sony addressed, or you had a bad sample? Either way, the dpreview numbers are pretty clear, and I'm gonna need detailed test comparison shots to prove otherwise. :)

Nope, I tried the production samples and it was being sold with the nex as a kit. The zoom was crappy too. dpreview being one thing, another is probably real life images by users. The general view is that nex e-mounts are very much in infancy so suppose they can only get better. I am still waiting.

No Richard, it will go on and on until the great E-mount lenses come out. Right now, the die-hard sony nex pundits will continue to persuade us of its virtues, while we die hard X1-ers which includes you haha will continue to hold our ground coz we cannot accept the kit lenses as capable of producing any IQ close to the X1.

The discussion will also cease when there is sudden realization that sony will not come out with great E-mount lenses so as not to cannibalize the alpha line.

meanwhile life goes on and the nex, X1 users will continue to take nice photos, arguing along the way:D

3D technology holds a lot of promise and it's fun.

As a diversion, I notice that these days with those powered glasses and all the 3D effect is okay (even for Avatar) but I recall watching "Captain EO" at Disneyland umpteen years ago and the 3D effect was better, I recall an asteroid floating out from screen towards me till the asteroid was right in front of my eyes??!! Nowadays I do not see that kind of "pop" like before? Or I'm mistaken?

I think 3D photography is really at infancy. very dangerous to invest, price will plummet quickly for early adopters.
