Sold my Black M9 and bought Steel

I had posted here about a week ago that I was going to list my barely used Black M9 on Ebay. It had 2000 actuations on it and it was in mint condition.

One member here ridiculed the idea I'd get list price for it and another member asked me to post the results.

The camera sold within the first few minutes at the Buy It Now price of $7000.

I'm not surprised and the buyer got a true mint condition M9 with none of the accessories even opened as I gave them the new unused extra's from my Steel M9.

As much as some say it's simple to get an M9 by 'calling around', for many people it's not that easy and they might need the camera for a trip or a job.

It was fun having both side by side...I do prefer the Steel one just a bit and am glad I was able to swap it for not that much of a loss (paypal and ebay fees).

I really wanted a steel one, but when the dealer called and said I've got a black one, could be another few months for a silver, I lost all sense of patience and got it. I've really enjoyed the camera, so no regrets, but man those silver ones look good!

Long waits are also driving up the price of other used Leica products. I'm in the market for a 50mm Summilux ASPH, and a used lens is now selling for practically the same price as a new one. If the wait goes on for too much longer I may just lose interest.

Wilfredo, I hear ya on that 50 Lux ASPH. I have been looking for one for 4 months and no luck (new). BUT, eventually they will be available so I will be patient. M9's are selling used between $6500-$7200 and they sell quick. Not long until the one year anniversary of the M9 announcement and they are still hard to come by. Crazy!

With the Euro continuing to drop against the USD you might get a new one from a European dealer for the same price as a used one in the US market.

Your Steel Grey paint got a topcoat to protect the paint from scratches? Later batches all got the protective coating added. If your fingernails can scratch the grey paint, its an older batch

Mine seems to have a protective coating..thanks for scaring me...lol

First I've heard of a 'protective coating' on the steel gray M9. Where is this coming from?

What I have heard is that the paint formula itself was changed after the first batch and it is much tougher, more like the black paint is a new formula that is more ware-resistant than anything Leica has used before.

Either way, its good that the steel gray has a more durable finish that looks good longer with normal use.

Same here and the two (new) I saw at dealers in Europe had problems: one exhibits focus problem, the second one had the hood stuck.

That being said I have been using my VOightlander 50mm 1.5, and I still keep amazed at the quality of that lens.

Wilfredo, I had a similar experience. I waited for nearly one year for a new black 50mm Summilux and finally gave up and bought a new Summicron instead. No dealer could predict when Summiluxes would be delivered in the future. The Summicron is a great improvement over my old 1966 version. Then three weeks later my dealer called asking if I still wanted a Summilux!!! Sense prevailed and I kept my pristine Summicron which is a very fine lens.

As much as i like aesthetics (the grey one is really much more Leica than the black one, no doubt about it) for me it was simple: I told my dealer I'll take what comes first, got a black one and thats it...

Others are still waiting: I have fun taking pictures like never before ...

Enjoy the better one and the pictures

You guys may want to watch the classifieds here. Two 50mm Summmilux ASPHs were listed yesterday for what I thought were very low prices. Both have since apparently sold, but you may want to contact the sellers in case the sales don't go through.

My saga for this lens was that I ordered it last October with an M9 and 28mm Elmarit M, and after the M9 and 28mm arrived, my dealer in CT gave up trying to find one. Blessing in disguise, as I found a new one a week later from Allen's Cameras in Levittown, PA after calling 15 dealers. Allen was terrific.
