Jamie Roberts Posted May 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, I'm very happy to say that I've been invited by Leica to do a presentation on my work with the digital Ms (M8 and M9) at the M Roadshow in Toronto on June 03. I'm putting the finishing touches on my presentation, and I'm going to cover a bit of my history, how I use the Ms, and my overall workflow. I was wondering if any of you had specific questions or areas of interest you'd like me to answer as well. Just post them here... See you Thursday! Jeff S Posted May 31, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 31, 2010 Hey Jamie, sorry but I'm not anywhere near Toronto. However, if I attended a show, I would be quite interested in comparisons...real prints, that is...between an M8 and an M9. Having a working photographer, with real results in hand, would be worth the price of admission...to me. Anyway, 2 cents from someone who can't attend, which you're welcome to ignore. wstotler Posted May 31, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 31, 2010 Congrats, Jaime. I'm sure you'll provide an excellent show for attendees! Chris Usher was the "inspiration" presenter in Philly (he was exceptionally good). If the audience in Toronto is like the audience in Philly, many folks will benefit from very basic advice about metering, focus, and framing--in addition and concurrent with tips on spotting "the moment." So you're seeing the moment and have your M9. . . . Now what? The canned Leica presentation before Usher's inspirational portion left a bit to be desired on this front as it covered menus (among other things) in cumbersome detail but was very light on useful, prescriptive help for those people new to the camera and rangefinders--and, frankly, manual photography. Usher's focus wasn't on that, so his portion really didn't offset the Leica presentation's weaknesses--his focus was on sharing his experience with the photography from a "moment" perspective, not on a "here's how you could shoot this" perspective. Usher did cover a bit about workflow--the slide that was "missing" was the full chain from camera through computer to printer/Web. I think that would have been helpful as a presentation anchor. I posted a run-down of Usher's commentary here, which may be of use to you during your prep: Chris Usher on Flickr - Photo Sharing! Or, maybe not. But there it is just in case. Anyway, best of luck to you. I'd love to see you speak--Toronto is prohibitively far away. Cheers, Will

Jeff Hi Jeff-- I'll see what I can do with prints from both cameras... of course, my Epson decided that now would be a good time to clog So far, both cameras really do amaze me in terms of detail! jonoslack Posted June 1, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 1, 2010 Hi there Jamie Congratulations. I'd love to be there too, but it's a long way from Diss!
wda Posted June 1, 2010 Share #9 Posted June 1, 2010 Jamie, a true honour to be invited. Good Luck! I cannot attend but would have been interested in relative framing accuracy (M8/M9) and ease of accurate framing. I find that I have to take more shots to be absolutely sure of correct framing with my M8 than I did with my M6.
Jeff S Posted June 1, 2010 Share #10 Posted June 1, 2010 So far, both cameras really do amaze me in terms of detail! If the prints from the M9 don't amaze you more than the M8's, then you might want to hold off rather than ruin sales. But, if they don't differ, shoot me a PM and save me the upgrade $. zeitz Posted June 1, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 1, 2010 Jeff S., ruin sales, of the M9? What sales? There seemingly haven't been any M9's for sale in the US (and I assume Canada) from late March until mid-May. Even now it is hardly a trickle. I won't mention popular lenses, such as new 50mm Luxes and new 90mm Summicrons. These may not have been available since the Fall. My question, Jamie is when does Leica plan to re-enter the North American market?

I find that I have to take more shots to be absolutely sure of correct framing with my M8 than I did with my M6. Hi David--thanks for your best wishes! I have an original M8, and to my eyes the framing on the M9--especially for some of the longer lenses like the 75, where it really counts--is much better than the M8's and more like my M6 as well. But, if they don't differ, shoot me a PM and save me the upgrade $. Jeff Hey Jeff-- Both the M8's prints and the M9's are amazing. Under similar well-lit circumstances, the output is very similar and often with minimal post-processing (which is great for me). But the M9 gives more detail for the same FOV (that's important for group shots!), and is, to my eyes, anyway, capable of even more than the M8. The prints reflect that, I think... with the M9's increased exposure flexibility I've found I can push prints a little more without worrying as much about noise as I do with the M8. But there's a fine family resemblance, IMO, in good output from the DMR, M8 and M9... with the M9 winning in many other important shooting categories for me now. kkochheiser Posted June 2, 2010 Share #16 Posted June 2, 2010 Jamie, Unfortunately, I'm not able to make the Toronto Road Show but I will be at the Indy one. While I don't know who was invited to do the presentation there, I hope they prepare as well as you. Kent
mtomalty Posted June 2, 2010 Share #17 Posted June 2, 2010 Congratulations Jamie. Not a question but, perhaps some advice to consider. It's not likely your style, but if it comes up in the excitement, steer clear of the urge to talk down the competition. Talk up the M8/M9 and the unique attributes they bring to the photographic experience. I've been to a few events in recent months and nothing pi$$es me off more than to hear presenters condescending comments about competitive products. Riccis Posted June 2, 2010 Share #20 Posted June 2, 2010 Jamie: I don't know if my prints are still being used in the road shows (or if they will make it to Toronto) but if so, they are 20"x30"s from MP scans, M8.2 and M9... I will check with Justin if this is the case... Cheers,
