beewee Posted May 30, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got back home from a 3 week trip and noticed that my M8.2 does not cannot turn on. When I flick the switch from "off" to "s" or "c", the orange LED near the bottom right of the LCD screen flashes momentarily but then the camera never boots up (no battery or frame indicator in the window). Has anyone seen this problem before?

andybarton Posted May 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 30, 2010 Is the battery fully charged? Did you take the camera on your trip?
beewee Posted May 30, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted May 30, 2010 I'll let the battery charge up and try again. I had it on the plane with me on the way home and last I checked it was 3/4 full.
andybarton Posted May 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 30, 2010 Was the camera working last time you used it while on your trip? Is it a genuine Leica battery?
beewee Posted May 30, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted May 30, 2010 The battery is the original one that came with the camera (bought used). I shot a few frames on the plane on the first of my 3 flights. When I finished my 2nd flight, I noticed that my camera stopped working (after about 15hrs since I last used it).
Valau Posted May 30, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 30, 2010 Hi, I have the same problem with my M8.2, if you 'jiggle' the battery when you insert it into the camera the camera comes to life. The problem seems to me to be contact dirt and occurs when you insert a battery after charging. With me it occurred with a new Leica battery after charging it from the packaging. Once it is working if you take the battery out and replace it the camera works, for me it only doesn't work after charging. David
Dan States Posted May 30, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) It may have a softwear lockup. If so take out the battery and let the camera sit for 5-7 days when the internal battery discharges. This worked for me.
beewee Posted May 30, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted May 30, 2010 Thansk for all the replies. I just let the camera sit without the battery while I charged the battery for a few hours and the camera came back to life. I think the camera might have drained its battery while it was sitting in the bag.
ho_co Posted May 31, 2010 Share #9 Posted May 31, 2010 Bravo! Glad it came back. And thanks for posting the result!

This may not be the cause in your case, but it's quite common for M cameras to drain the battery if they are put in a case without being switched off. This is because a light pressure on the shutter button activates the meter which drains the battery surprisingly quickly.

ldhrads Posted May 31, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 31, 2010 Yup, That happened to me on a plane trip 3 weeks ago. Took a few shots on the flight and put it away probably with out turning it off. Camera was dead dead dead when I got to Vancouver. Fortunately I had a spare battery. Never stick it back in the bag without turning it off.

Glad to hear it was this problem and not a dead camera. Cheers, Will
trs Posted June 2, 2010 Share #14 Posted June 2, 2010 I could be drained because it was turned on all the time. But, there is also known symptom that M8 looses battery quick (or it thinks it did). My conclusion so far is it is fauty battery. But, I have not been able to confirm that so far. Basically, it has happened to me multiple times that frame before I have at least two sticks of juice. Seconds later, next frame, it goes dead with symptom explained by OP. Anyway, no worry, plug in fully charged battery, it will be happy as mentioned earlier.
