Bob Dylan images fighting to be born

Hi, I had promised some Dylan pics in a previous thread, here they are just from a few hours ago from his concert in Athens.

I was at the front but trapped on the side and could not move to another point. All with my 90mm pre-asph Summicron at f2.5, 640 and 1250 ISO. Shutter speeds 1/90 and 1/125. I had also my old Elmar 5cm/3.5 with me but it was too dark changing lenses and I needed the telephoto because of the distance.

Greetings!!

PS: The young guitarist is Charlie Sexton

PS2: The images really fought to be born, focusing was a nightmare. I am one of the traditionalists but boy I wish the M8 had autofocus in there or at least I was dreaming of a Sony NEX with an M adapter and focusing aid. When I got out, I returned to my real self and stopped dreaming these silly fantasies (but I might get a NEX as a backup body).

I can tell you one thing - AF would have done far worse than this - or would have been spouting death-rays. Good stuff, but it should be in the Photo-Forum.

Not true Jaap.

I shot a lot of pop concerts over the years with Canon and Leica.

I can tell you it is hard labour to get a few good shots with a Leica in those lightening conditions. On the other hand it's a piece of cake with a 1D or 1Ds.

My estimation is at least 5X as many keepers and no stress with Canon AF and a fast focussing lens like a 135 2.0L or 70-200 IS L.

To the original poster: very fine pictures of one of my heroes.

Sexton makes all the difference in his band, does not he??

Yes, Sexton makes the difference, it's true.

I am not very satisfied with the images though, I have about a dozen of others in the series, but with similar problems. First of all my angle of view was not ideal, I could have pushed myself in the middle but I am relatively tall and did not want to annoy people. Second, the mic shadow should not be on his face, and this is I think something the lighting people should have considered. It happened when he was at his keyboards and most of the time he spent it there.

I guess I am getting too old for this kind of photography. My tungsten slides from a Dire Straits concert 23 years ago with a Canon AE-1 Program and a 70-210 zoom (front row) look fantastic and absolutely professional. I was 18 then. It's sad when your equipment gets better and your pics worse. Happens to me also at landscape photography, which is my main category of shooting.

Anyway, the whole series of the images is at my facebook page
