On another note, any diff between v4 and v5 or C1?

Honestly, I didn't update to V5 until after I sold the M9s. And honestly I have too much going on right now to go back to old raw files to do a test. But the new version seems to have some improvements in general.

IMHO, anyone who makes decisions about what tool is right for them based on someone else's web posting is bound to be disappointed unless the poster works exactly the same way you work, which is a highly dubious proposition given the different and unique photographic tools that exist between our ears.

Very true. I can't say I decided to try the M9s because of web postings, but other people's opinions don't at all reflect my personal experience. My advice to anyone who is considering an M9 is to borrow or rent one for a week first. It's not really enough time to tell how the camera works for you, but it's better than NOT trying it out first.

It's funny, but my desire to switch back to film started when I was shooting with my M6s while waiting for the M9s to come in.

My reasons for switching back to film (and medium format film at that) are tied to my individual needs and preferences as they relate to my work. They're not relevant to anyone else and probably I should just keep them to myself. Perhaps if someone has similar needs I can save them some time and money.

I don't know why moire is more of a problem on the M9. Maybe it's just bad luck, but I never had any photos ruined by moire on the M8 but I have lost some frames with the M9. Many times it can be fixed but I have definitely had some photos, a few important ones, that were unusable.

Gees, and I was close to going back to DRP for this kind of entertainment, nachos and all.....efftee- keep on taking photos and learning- you only need to enjoy your work. Some days my M9 kicks butt on my D700, other days vice versa.

I thought I'd entered a forum warp hell and was in DRP land too myself.

Efftee - enjoy your camera and don't worry about the naysayers and snipers. Nothing's perfect in life ...

Y'know - he was naysaying the M8. ;)

It's so easy to just say 'ignore the naysayers' - as far as I'm concerned that's no more valid than my 'yawn' comment - just a typical interwebs type of generic dismissal. Why didn't you throw in the other generic, do-it-all comment: "stop whining".

If there'd been something constructive about this thread, even if the OP had done a genuine side-by-side comparison that showed something we haven't seen before, I wouldn't have criticized the post.

But this was just oafish boasting as far as I could see, with an image that showed as much about the weakness of the camera, as its strengths.

If you really think the discussion that followed was like DRP, then I suggest you go over there and take a look a little more often. (But in fact I don't believe you think that, at all).

Anyway, it's a very sensitive bunch of flowers over here on the M9 forum. The scandal of someone daring to disagree that the M9 is the best camera EVAHHH!

Pass the smelling salts, Doris!

No I didn't. I said that the M9 is a worthy upgrade from the M8. Can you read? Or are you just hell bent on crucifying me?

What makes your opinion the be all and end all of all opinions? You are welcome to criticize, you don't even need to justify, but for crying out loud, at least be objective. Could I not make my point with a 'bad picture'? You even agreed that the M8 is inferior -- YOUR WORDS: "I'm not by any means saying the M8 could do better - it definitely couldn't."

Seriously man, what are you hoping to achieve here? Superiority over me as a photographer? Ya ok, I concede; you sure sound like you know a heck of lot more than me anyway. Tell you what, save yourself the aggravation of having to deal with oafs like me -- IGNORE MY POSTS AND THREADS.

Enjoy your life. And M8. :)

Well said Efftee - but seriously though, just enjoy your Leica. Forums can be extremely useful for information - and I have learnt a lot from this one. But post at your peril - there are a lot of very sensitive people out there. Go and take pictures and have fun

Wow man - you sure do take things personally.

Anyways, I'm enjoying my Millenium M6 and my M8 just fine, thanks - so I'll respect Andy's wishes and leave it at that, eh? ;)

Wish I were there, now... - and it proves nicely that EXIFtool now correctly decodes the temperature (27°C in this case) for the tropics, too...

Enjoy your new M9 and take pictures, don't play play too much in forums! ;)

Best,

Michael

not a great image to support Leica M9 image quality......I think we can all agree on that right?

No need to argue...my 350d and 35/2.0 can do better, my M8 as well.

M9 has advantages over both but this image does not show them.

best

Oh yes- the way film and digital handle light is quite different. there was an article on the subject in LFI quite recently. The main reason digital gets a bad press regarding dynamic range is the fact that many users treat it like film, both in exposure and postprocessing. I'm glad we didn't get into an oil paint vs aquarel fight :)

Wow, I have the same feeling about this.

You're very talented Jaapv, your pics are astonishing. Reading your posts is always informative. A true master.

Hey jaapv, when you develop this in C1 does the purple fringing completely go away? It is pretty hard to get rid of it in LR3, even with defringe edges. If it does work better in C1, would you mind posting it?

Bill, you crack me up.

Basic rule of thumb - a camera's quality is measured by the best picture ever taken with it, not by the worst picture ever taken with it.

(Implying nothing about efftee's effort, either way ;) )

Unfortunately, not always :(, especially if one gets fringing in three colours in different planes of focus....
