Filter thread for Elmar 50/3.5 and collapse blocker

Hi all,

a good friend and neighbor of mine (he is 89 now in perfect health) gave me an Elmar 5cm/3.5. It has great sharpness in the center but poor at the corners, needs to be stopped down a lot. But it has the Leica look. Here is a portrait of my friend Theodore and on the other image you can see:

a) a 10mm wide velcro self-gripping tape around the lens tube that prevents full collapsing, You can remove it any time you like as it does not leave sticky residue.

B) a fotodiox 39-52mm step-up ring that fits perfectly on the lens front part (but does not stay on). Use a bit of paper tape for a super tight fit and it's ready for a UV/IR cut filter. Of course you can use a 39-to-anything step up ring. I just happened to have the 39-52mm one.

I am going to shoot Bob Dylan on Saturday's concert with this and of course with my summicron 90. I still cannot decide which 50mm I should get fro my M8, this little Elmar buys me some time. I am inclined to the Summicron, I tried the Summarit in the shop and was not impressed.

Greetings!

the idea is about the tape and not the particular lens. I personally do not risk it even with the Elmar, but you can use the velcro tape to any collapsible lens u think it is needed, without leaving residue.

Not according to M8 manual. I want to be on the safe side, and probably some others too. The idea is intended for this kind of users and the thread is not about which lens can be collapsed or not. This has been discussed extensively. The thread is about a non-residual collapse blocker for those who decide not to collapse their lenses. And it's about the filter ring, which is even more important.

Well, if you want to go by the book, the official Leica recommendation is Dymo tape ( see the Leica Handbook for instance 1983) Leica has admitted the M8/9 manual is wrong btw. Now the official Leica recommendation is to mount and dismount extended, and it can be collapsed safely. Maybe they should publish an erratum.

you are very resourceful and i like the portrait, btw..if you're still undecided on which 50 to buy, perhaps don't rush into it yet, especially since you seem mostly happy with the look of the images from the collapsible. please post some images from the bob dylan concert, i'd love to see them:)

Hi brill64,

thanx a lot. The thing is I am shooting professionally a landscape project in the fall and want to have a good 50mm by then. The Elmar 5cm won't do. I still have my two Fuji S5 bodies and a couple of Nikon lenses, but I want to go M system only for this project for various reasons (weight, quality, discipline myself as an RF shooter).

As for the Dylan concert, I hope to get the M8 past the security (sometimes they are too strict) and grab some good pics!

greetings!

Cool, I just picked up a collapsible Elmar 2.8 and was worried about pushing it all the way in. So no worries? Must be just barely clearing the shutter in there...

BTW, I find it MUCH more difficult to focus than the Summicron 35. I only tried a few shots so far though since we have been without electricity these past three days and I only just got the lens on Tuesday.

Thank you. Like the poster above I had looped a thick rubber band a couple of times around the shaft so it wouldn't close all the way just in case. It's actually not a bad arrangement though because I can also use the rubber band to keep my lens cap on. The aftermarket UV filter is a smaller diameter than the lens so it's not very snug.

Like Jaapv said--the collapsed lens clears the shutter without an issue. Same for the older screw-mount 5cm f/3.5 Elmar. The Velcro solution is a clean way to keep the lenses from collapsing, agreed. Also agreed that it's not needed. The step-up filter ring is clever, might be looking further into that.

Cheers,

Will

Of course you need to unscrew the filter every time you need to change the aperture. Boy, I love these Leica-type rituals! As if taking off the base plate to change the card was not enough!

By the way, the Dylan images are here:

Take care!
