KM-25 Posted June 14, 2010 Share #61 Posted June 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Generally speaking, I don't do photography for anyone else but my self. I take photos to satisfy my soul, my inquisitive nature and my appetite for color, tone, form and convergence. It's been my passion and my way of life for over 34 of my 43 years. I also get to engage in it more than most because it has been my sole source of income for over 20 years.

honcho Posted June 15, 2010 Share #62 Posted June 15, 2010 So far most contributors have been refreshingly honest and unpretentious in their replies in comparison to similar threads I have seen and avoided elsewhere. I am a full-time professional photographer.
W4Leica Posted June 16, 2010 Share #63 Posted June 16, 2010 Use Nikon digital for clients as a pro; and use Leica film for hobby. I am both.
FiZZ Posted June 16, 2010 Share #64 Posted June 16, 2010 Willy Ronis used a Pentax SLR with a consumer zoom, but still managed to take world class photographs of a quality we can only dream of. I guess the question of how proficient/comfortable you are with your equipment comes into play. I can't work with a dSLR, it has too many buttons for my liking. But at the same time, emulsion if very different than CCD/CMOS sensor. Back in the day you only paid for the glass. Any reliable body worked. Now you have to pay for the electronics in the camera itself. Whole different ball game.
mgreernz Posted June 17, 2010 Share #65 Posted June 17, 2010 I decided years ago, that trying to make money from my photography would take all the fun out of it. So I've remained nothing more than an enthusiastic amateur, who after almost 50 years with an SLR kit happily transitioned back to an RF. But dang! Having done so, it rekindled my enthusiasm for B&W film. So I've now bought an M7 as well. Yep, I know: barking mad.

erl Posted June 19, 2010 Share #68 Posted June 19, 2010 Photography caused me to 'lose my job' as a pro engineer so I declared that it must support me in return. It did, and much more satisfyingly than the engineering probably would have. It (self) taught me discipline, control, vision, responsibility, and, oh yes, pleasure! I was a Pro, I still take assignments, but not so many come now. Mainly those that get put in someone else's "too hard basket". That satisfies me (smugly) but I mainly enjoy my own photographic indulgences now. Consequently, I think more creatively and that reflects through my whole life. I am healthier, but older (catch 22?). Amateur or Pro? I don't really know, or care. Retired or still working? Still don't know. Happy - YES! Wealthy? What a joke. I'm the richest person I know. I just have trouble paying bill's.
