NZDavid Posted May 28, 2010 Share #21 Â Posted May 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Actually that conclusion of his is false, as he compares to an M9 file cropped down to APS-C. So the performance is slightly below an M8. Which is pretty impressive for the type of camera anyway, so I am puzzled why he pulled this little trick. Â I think that Putts' reasoning was that a 24 Elmarit ASPH lens on the M9 cropped to a 35mm FOV is a more valid comparison with the X1 and its APS-C sensor than comparing a 35mm lens on the M9 with its full-frame sensor. I'd still welcome some more explanation as to why he chose this methodology. For example, how do the image circles and frame sizes compare? Certainly the sensors are very different, and so much now depends on how the image is processed -- not just the optics. Â When comparing the M8 you are comparing a sensor that in design terms is several years older than the X1's (even if it is approximately the same size). The M9 is the newer camera with the newer sensor, so I find that comparison more revealing. I also suspect not many people would now contemplate buying an M8 unless there were compelling reasons to do so.

jsrockit Posted May 28, 2010 Share #22 Â Posted May 28, 2010 ISO is just a factor, and some shots at ISO 1600 or 3200 will look much more (or less) noisy than others, depending on the lighting, contrast, etc. Â Just as with film, so my original comment stands. jsrockit Posted May 28, 2010 Share #23 Â Posted May 28, 2010 I'll have to check out how it does in low light. I'm sure people would be very concerned showing up with a 'pocket cam' for the posed award shots, I'll probably take both. Â Put a neck strap on it and it no longer is a pocket cam. Most people think the X1 is a film camera when I bring it around...
