alexb Posted May 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A near mint 40mm Summicron-C that I purchased recently has the serial number 2600000. 5 consecutive zeros seems a little unlikely, so I am wondering if this might have some special meaning like, for instance, all preproduction lenses may have the same number, or perhaps the lens has been refurbished and the original number was lost. Any thoughts?

alexb Posted May 25, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted May 25, 2010 Do you know how lucky you are boy ....do you remember this song ? You hum it, I'll play it. "Back in the USSR"? I guess you mean that you think it's for real? 2600000 would seem to indicate '73 which was the year of introduction.
luigi bertolotti Posted May 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 25, 2010 Round numbers or next to are always appealing for collectors, even if they haven't any special significate... in your case is a normal number inside a big batch of 10.000 Summicrons 40 (2.590.501 to 2.600.500), which, incidentally, is not the first one (another of 4.000 items was allocated in 1972), nor the last. Of course, as a collector, you have all my envy...

Looks like jc may be right

Looks like jc may be right ... middle in strict terms should be 2.595.500 (or 501 ).. but not with the majesty of a "five-zeros" number... Sigh... I've nothing better than a 129.006 and a 1.900.
