mod2001 Posted May 27, 2010 Share #21  Posted May 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) My man, no worries, it's just that there is no "Leica look". It's a fantasy. Take the right pictures and you will have the look you desire....it's about composition, not equipment.  It's not a fantasy, take a picture with different lenses i.e. from Leica, Zeiss and Voigtländer, they will look different.  Yogi

Mills and Boon at it's best  yep, you're right, all lenses render the same way, no difference between a 50/1.4 from Nikon, Canon, Leica or Zeiss or whatever. Even my Holga looks the same.  Yogi
Guest stnami Posted May 27, 2010 Share #24 Â Posted May 27, 2010 Mr Bear ......Yogi type maybe you should check out what the Leica look was about historically and why the Leica look no longer has the same implications in the digital age. A digital Holga who told you it was digital your side kick Boo Boo?

Even my Holga looks the same.  Yogi  I think you are missing my point: Yes, lenses can and do render differently. No, there is no specific "look" from Leica lenses. They vary wildly in contrast, distortion, color rendition, flare and out of focus impression. The only homogenous character they all have is that they are all capable of good results if used within their limits. Example: The Summar 50.  There is absolutely no similarity between a first generation Summicron and a current Summilux ASPH. A first generation Summilux 35 renders more like a Nikor 35 f1.4 than anything Leica makes today.  Funny thing is people have been talking about the "Leica Look" since the 1930's.... I don't have any experience with older Leica lenses, so i can not compare them. To come back to the X1, the look is different from an actual 35 cron/rit, i miss something there, that's the reason for me not to buy it.  On the other hand, when i look at flickr for example, i often identify Zeiss or leica lenses directly without reading the exif or the comments.  Yogi

Maybe that look comes from the way the photogs operate their cameras - very carefully in many cases since they cost so much, and take so long to get serviced.  HILARIOUS! Could be their composition is different...hard to shoot, fondle and keep in a glass case all at the same time!

Nei1 Posted May 28, 2010 Share #30 Â Posted May 28, 2010 Maybe that "leicalook"has been out resolved by the sensor,.........to be honest it was a film thing and only appeared if the photo was good enough which would make it a rare thing indeed on digital,........ h00ligan Posted May 28, 2010 Share #31 Â Posted May 28, 2010 Again I don't know about the leica look, but I can say the first few shots with the x1 were VERY sharp (discernible at iso 100 from the gf1 w/20mm) and the colour seems to be fantastic. I can work in LR to try and replicate with the gf1, even got pretty close, but there's a level of sharp, or almost 3d-ish (maybe the sharpness making textures pop?). Â The dynamic range also seems considerably better than either mft cam i have in my possession, which is nice.. Â The downside as everyone knows.. battery door feels cheap, slow AF... also the Panasonic can focus quite a bit closer to the subject, even with macro on the x1 Â I've really only fired off some snapshots, but so far so good - will get some real world use tonight to test it in low light environs. Â I can say that this is the sharpest lens/cam I've used yet.. the added clarity is really nice.
