The Leica 30% offer really detriments non-EU persons

Well, I guess I am more on your side on this one. I am happy that they are doing it, relieved even. It is what I think is right, but that isn't so often done in business, so I was worried. If they had not owned up to the problems, I would have returned the camera.

The favour is surely the two IR filters and the break on the lensprice.

The lens discount is clearly a gesture of sorts but it is largely at the expense of the dealer (Leica's attempt to persuade the dealers of the merits of such action - "to secure our mutual business on a sustained basis" - is very weasel-like). A real gesture would have been a discount voucher off any Leica purchase bought at your local dealer or even a 'token' €100 rebate cheque ("as compensation for your inconvenience"). Personally speaking, I couldn't really care whether Leica made a gesture or not - I simply want the camera I bought working as I expect it to. So far, Leica's response has been quick and they appear to be dealing with the recall in an efficient manner.

As far as the filters go, I don't see anything especially generous in the offer of two free ones. Like many others here I have had to buy my own anyway (Leica UK's MD recently informed me that the Leica-provided filters wouldn't be available until March). Far from being a gesture, I don't think Leica had any other realistic option. Pretending the IR problem doesn't exist and not offering anything at all doesn't seem to me to be a viable option. Leica could spin the problem as much as they like but the IR sensitivity is clearly a major problem for anyone shooting colour - much worse than anything suffered by Nikon DSLR and RD-1 users. Without presenting some kind of solution (whether half-cocked or not), I personally don't think the M8 had a future. I, for one, would have returned my camera.

latest news from Leica.....

Dear LEICA M8 Customer,

In our haste to respond as quickly as possible to LEICA M8 owners regarding our CEO's lens offer, we might have mistakenly sent an incorrect version of the price list to some customers.

1. We prepared two versions of the price list - one for countries that implemented a Value-Added Tax such as the EU and Canada, and one for countries that do not have a Value-Added Tax structure.

2. Also the price of the LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/1 was wrong in both price lists.

3. The prices both price lists represent the complete price that the M8 owner pays to Leica - that means all applicable customs duties, VAT (where applicable) as well as shipping and customs clearing costs.

In the very near future, you will receive the correct price list for the country you live in, and the prices will reflect a price approximately 30% lower than the average Suggested Retail Price of these Leica products worldwide.

We again apologize.

Kind regards
