Javad Posted December 25, 2006 Share #1  Posted December 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi,  just a question. I have an M8 chrome with now firmware 1.09 since beginning on November. On pictures with a light vackground like blue sky or clouds one can see 5 small dark grey circles. In the first few weeks I did not notice that because I made only B&W photos. But today I made a few color photos with ISO 160 and I can see 5 small grey circles (dots). First I thought the sensor has to bee cleaned, but then I used the DNG of my B&W earlier photos and I found the circles again, on the same position.  Take a look at these and let me know what you suggest.  The circles are in the upper mid right of the pictures.  Thanks  Regards  Javad

scanner Posted December 25, 2006 Share #2 Â Posted December 25, 2006 Which F- number did you use ? Â F 16 had a large depth of field and dust will be sharp in the image F 5,6 had a less DOF so the dust will be almost invisible. Â Please, test it. Greetings, rob
DaveEP Posted December 25, 2006 Share #3 Â Posted December 25, 2006 They look like sensor dust to me..... have you tried cleaning it?
cocker Posted December 25, 2006 Share #4 Â Posted December 25, 2006 Angels? Â Or probably sensor dust. Â Happy Christmas
atufte Posted December 25, 2006 Share #5 Â Posted December 25, 2006 That's dust on the sensor, no doubt...
Javad Posted December 25, 2006 Author Share #6  Posted December 25, 2006 Thanks for your suggestion. Both were taken with F16, with 2.8, 24 mm.  Does this mean that the problem could be sensor dust? I did try to clean the sensor, tomorrow I will make afew other pic's to see the result and a few tests with F 4 - 5.6  Thanks  Happy Christmas  Javad
scanner Posted December 25, 2006 Share #7  Posted December 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) The same I have with dust on the DMR.   F 11 and F 16 ----visible  F 5,6 -- not visible.   So when I tested I use F 16 ----dust and then my swaps and fluid and within 5 minutes all is clear. You can use the dust button on the M 8 and he will clean itself. Nikon and Canon users must go to the service to let clean it. They are afraid to destroy the chip......... Freelancers ( using Nikon and canon) who works for me told that it cost euro 20,00 each time.
Mark_Rinella Posted December 25, 2006 Share #8 Â Posted December 25, 2006 Rob, the M8 sensor is not self cleaning. The sensor cleaning setting only keeps the shutter open for you to clean the sensor. It's the Digilux 3 that has the ultrasonic dust cleaning system.

It's the Digilux 3 that has the ultrasonic dust cleaning system. Â I playd with the M8 in Solms and really, he "ask" if i want to clean and then he start shaking. I will look on the manual if i am wrong. Â Â Â &&&&&&**********&&&&&&& page 117 and YES I AM WRONG. It only gives acces to the sensor. I think I have misunderstood in Solms the term "cleaning" so I wait there for two minutes with the thought he was clean...... So I have made a fool of myself, sorry !! But the sensor could be cleaned with air without gas or with Swaps (???) like the DMR ??? The glass before this sensor is very thin I have heard so it seems to be very, very carefull because warranty will not given if you damage the sensor. Bob Ross Posted December 25, 2006 Share #12 Â Posted December 25, 2006 I had a case of dust and when I mentioned it on another forum, Jono suggested that I check the back of the lenses, too. I cleaned the sensor and also the rear and mount of the lenses and the rear lens caps and the problems went away. Bob
Walker Posted December 25, 2006 Share #13  Posted December 25, 2006 Javad,  These marks are typical for tiny smears on the sensor. There are several threads dealing with this, which is something that will occur to any digital camera. Here is the best treatment of the issue that I have seen so far: http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/  I cannot remember who gave this address, but it was in this forum a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, the conclusion was that you better get used to clean it yourself, but taking great care in the process.  Best of luck  Willy
sean_reid Posted December 26, 2006 Share #14 Â Posted December 26, 2006 It's dust or dirt on the sensor and it's the same thing we deal with on most DSLRs, the R-D1, etc. I found dusting negatives took a lot more time than cleaning the sensor now and again. I recommend visible dust, not sure of URL but its an easy Google. Â I find that it helps a lot to never leave the camera chamber open (lens off) and to keep the shortest "open air" exposure time possible when changing lenses. Â Cheers, Â Sean
jaapv Posted December 26, 2006 Share #15 Â Posted December 26, 2006 It is my impression that the M8 gets dirty easier than the average DSLR, but is easier to clean as well. These flecks look like grease spots. As Guy pointed out elsewhere, new digital camera's tend to exhibit those for the first few hundred exposures.
marknorton Posted December 26, 2006 Share #16 Â Posted December 26, 2006 I've had to clean my sensor a few times - a couple of times, a blower was all that was required, other times I used a sensor swab and eclipse fluid when there's been "sticky" marks on it. Can't see there are sensor swabs yet for this sensor size, so you cannot do it with a single sweep. Â I think the sensor cleaning function is good - reduces the risk of you accidentally closing the shutter while cleaning the sensor which would really ruin your day. Any swab sized for the EOS 1D should be fine.  For cleaning the DMR, I use the visible Dust brush one size down from the full frame brush.  Robert
