can anyone tell me anything about my new M8?

I am waiting for my new M8 to clear customs- after they take their share- I guess something/someone has to pay for the hospitals and schools...

anyhow- the camera is a grey M8 and comes with no paperwork- and no box- history largely unknown.

It has been modified- as it does not have its original leather- the leather looks like the m8.2/m9 leather- the red dot has been modified to grey (paint removed)- and the m8 black paint is gone... I have already purchased a replacement red dot...

Is there any resource to date the manufacture/age of the camera from the serial number? the last 4 digits are 1061...

I have read that some of the first manufacture m8's had build/shutter issues- can the serial number identify if it was in that range?

also the camera comes with a collapsible elmar 50 2.8 - I think it looks to be a V1 lens- am I correct in assuming that this lens can actually be collapsed on the camera without any problems? I know I must mount and remove it fully extended to avoid scraping anything- but once on I am hoping it can be collapsed down for pocketability...

You can download the M8 instructions from the Leica website. I note on p. 86 (English Version), Leica seems to say that any lens with retractable tubes has to be kept in the extended position. I don't remember where, but I have read that the latest 50mm f2.8 Elmar can be safely collapsed after mounting in the extended position. I have one, and it collapses OK without any problem. But, I don't know about your version. Furthermore the manual states that exposure metering is not possible with several lenses, including the 50mm Elmar with serial numbers below 2 314 921.

I was under the impression that the M8 came in chrome and black only. Are you sure you have a gray one? If so, is it a modification?

Well, with no real authentic (TRUE HISTORY) behind this purchase, boy you maybe in fore a shock? All I' saying is that you could be looking at shutter fault issues) and other issues that would (require a trip too Solms or NJ. usa), and the costs associated with most repairs is an automatic $600.00 + usa Now with that said, go out and hopefully enjoy one of the (BEST) rangefiner digital cameras available to date. And allways invest in (LEICA) glass, you won't regret it;)

Ps.. please keep us posted as to how it all turns out

Off topic, but you got me puzzled because I have been using my 1949 Elmar 50mm extensively without ever having exposure problems (see thread M8 and Old Glass).

So I looked it up in the manual. The quoted serial number is correct, but instead of Elmar 50, the manual refers to the Elmarit-M 2.8/28....

Happy shooting!

My mistake. Thanks for correcting.

sorry- when I said grey- I meant chrome.

How about the serial number- is it possible to date the camera with that?

You need the FIRST few digits for an approximate age (early or later production)

You can retrieve how many exposures have been made if you are interested.
