I've updated my Leica M9 page with a short video on how to do manual white balance using a WhiBal greycard (or white paper or any neutral piece of material can be used).

It can be found down the first page of the M9 article (which has been slightly updated today with a few other minor hints and things):

leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica M9 Digital Rangefinder Camera

Or on the page about white balance in general:

I hope this clarifies and make it simple for those who had questions on this. Feel free to comment or ask questions.

thanks Thorsten. i liked the shortcut to the manual WB setting on the M9 (another forum member pointed that out; although attributed to the tip to you).

i appreciate the manual setting much better now, and i shoot RAW, it saves a lot more time in aperture, trying to correct WB (if setting in auto). look forward to more tips on m9 handling etc.

p.s downloaded the b&h podcast from itunes the other day on lighting and i was really happy that you bought out insights on natural light among other things.

Thanks. The B&H seminar is not yet on my website, but it's in iTunes. It is video no 7 and 8 in their list. It's a long piece and the sound isn't that good. But it helps to see it on iTunes instead of the B&H website video quality:

Very interesting and I am keen to get one but I am still coughing from the mailing cost from B&H. Is there a source in Europe?

Found this from rawworkflow.com who is the main seller of WhiBal: "we ship daily to virtually all parts of the world, with the bulk of international sales going to Europe and Australia. Shipments are via the U.S. Postal system. Rates for 1 WhiBal are as follows: First Class International: ~$2–$3 (2–3 weeks) Priority Mail International: $11–$13 (1–3 weeks) The delivery times are generally on the low side of the above scale"

Their website is: Digital Photography - RawWorkflow.com - Michael Tapes: photo news and commentary

I had the usual woes with AWB on the M8. My solution was simply to set manual K temperatures and assign each 'type' value to a user profile. I used a Minolta Color Meter II to analyse different typical lighting situations.

The situation is more complex with the M9. AWB works pretty well in most situations, including some really hairy ones with mixtures of halogen and fluorescent. It cannot handle 'classical' tungsten however (which I routinely set at 3000K). And it falls flat with the new fluorescent energy saving bulbs. So I carry an ExpoDisc, which has he added advantage that it can double to meter exposure in incident light.

This said, the obsession with 'natural' colours is pathetic. Leave that to the copy photographers and scanning people in the graphic industry, where an individual original has to be reproduced. A copy is not a picture.. A picture is not reality. It is not even a true copy of reality -- 'true copies' do not exist. It is a picture, for chrissake! Colour is subjective, like the rest of vision. Is my red the same is your red? Colours, shapes, light and shadow, are what perception psychologists call 'qualia', no more objective than the 'false colours' of heat cameras and satellite images.

To quote Magritte: "Ceci n'est pas une pipe."

And my standard setting at my standard user profile is 'Daylight'.

Not sure about this " A neat little feature is that in the viewfinder you see the suggested shitter time, say 1/1.000 second"
