Guest badbob Posted May 31, 2010 Share #21 Â Posted May 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well it seems like the X1 is proving too be on the lines of the costly M8 and M9's, I personally think that in another year from now, you will be able to get too get even better images from much cheaper brands. chris m. Â Cheaper cams will get better, yes. If you think back about 4 years, and how today's cheap cams compare to those, we might see an equivalent amount of improvement in another 8 to 10 years. Why the doubling of time? Because the industry is maturing, and there are diminishing returns with the lower-end cameras. Â But even then, in 8 years, you may very well see some new Leica cams that make the 2018 low-end cams' photos look like crap by comparison.
Advertisement Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Hi Guest badbob, Take a look here X1 squares up to M9 for a comparison.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted May 31, 2010 Share #22  Posted May 31, 2010 I know what you mean but the comparison stands - I looked at them in DNG at all levels of magnification in Aperture and trust me, what I have posted accurately represents what I saw! I can't repost them now at different sizes because I deleted the images from my library. I am not doubting the quality of your X1 files - they are bound to be very good - they should be with a dedicated lens and an APS-C sensor, but I am just questioning the comparison methodology. Julian Thompson Posted June 1, 2010 Author Share #23 Â Posted June 1, 2010 Gotcha - yes - I reckon the best way would be to export TIFFs and crop a portion of that perhaps in future. Â Still, the comparison does indeed show the quality of the X1 which is what I wanted to achieve for those who don't have ready access to the two cameras. How about if I want to take nice photo now?
Guest badbob Posted June 3, 2010 Share #27 Â Posted June 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, I should wait for 8 years then... How about if I want to take nice photo now? Â Yes, take the photos now, and during the next 8 years. They will get much better during that time, but especially since the X1 requires extra effort to get the shot in most cases, your efforts and experience will be a large factor in the photos getting better. It sure has worked that way for me.
RichardM8 Posted June 4, 2010 Share #28 Â Posted June 4, 2010 Size reduction would destroy, but doesn't taking a larger image and downscaling the res actually make flaws less obvious and images appear superficially sharper? Â Exactly. Â The attempts to make the M9 stand out better are charming though... Â While this type of comparison is always open for dispute for not being 100% scientific & lab proof, it gives more than a good impression how things relate to each other. Â IMO it shows a) the IQ of the X1 really is the benchmark for this type of camera and the IQ is at least 'very close' (understatement) to the M9 with a similar lens/setup. Â Tnx Julian! andym911 Posted June 4, 2010 Share #29  Posted June 4, 2010 the X1 Quality is not up for dispute..it is at least as good as the M8.  Sure its fixed lens and that gives it some limitation but IQ is surely on par with M9 at similar settings. Although I miss the manual focus and am a bit on the fence with the X1 it is extremely useful for those shots that make up everyday life.  best andy Welcome, dear visitor!
