Sspector15 Posted September 25, 2010 Share #21 Posted September 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I discovered a couple of ways to remove the S58. One was the same as wiggling off the TU, and as I was pulling the flash with one hand, at some point the camera shot away from the other and hit the floor on its base and did a half roll with the lens cap absorbing the only scrape. The camera seems fine. The second method requires a little downward pressure on the flash, and then it slides easily off. How would have thought!! Advertisement Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 Hi Sspector15, Take a look here Thumbs Up EP-1 Removal. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
alexmann Posted September 25, 2010 Share #22 Posted September 25, 2010 Just wiggle it gently while pulling. Once you've done it once it will lose some of its paint finish and become easier. This will not harm your camera hotshoe. Alex
richfx Posted September 25, 2010 Share #23 Posted September 25, 2010 An alternative to a zip tie is dental floss, which has worked well for me when I've wanted to remove it from my M9. I couldn't get it unstuck with my fingernail as Tim recommended. Rich
mgreernz Posted September 26, 2010 Share #24 Posted September 26, 2010 I encountered the same problem, but like several others solved it by filing off a slim cover of paint from the underneath of the ThumbsUp rails. Don't tell her, but to ensure I could file/sand the rails precisely without damaging the finish on any other portion of the ThumbsUp, I commandeered one of my wife's emery boards. It now slides in and out of the flash bracket as required, but also continues to fit firmly.
drdannn Posted March 12, 2011 Share #25 Posted March 12, 2011 I have a thumbs up on an M9. Had one on an m8 too for a couple of months. After reading this thread I am a little concerned about continuing this on my new m9. I can see where it is possible that this device may not be "for this camera". On the issue of removing it, I have used a wood cuticle stick and pushed a bit. The wood won't scratch the TU finish. The dental floss idea is good too. I have tried the Leica Hand Grip and find it a bit uncomfortable when shooting, but really comfortable when just carrying the camera around between shots . Dannybuoy Posted March 13, 2011 Share #26 Posted March 13, 2011 I had the same problem. It was stuck in the mount. I used a small flat head screwdriver to lever it way from the body a little. I got a small dent in the paint but that's fine, M9s are meant to carry a few battle scars plus I'm not precious about it getting a little roughed up in the persuit of happyness. It's now loose enough to wiggle out easily.
Washington Posted March 13, 2011 Share #27 Posted March 13, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Steve above is right… a wee bit of material gone can make a world of difference. Mine new was very tight too. Also I fond that one needs to insure the set screw is REALLY loose and clear of the hot show bottom as I have made this mistake myself by not backing off the set-screw enough. Cheers. sblutter Posted March 13, 2011 Share #28 Posted March 13, 2011 I love that its tight - don't have to use the set screw Mine comes off often for Visoflex use
Washington Posted March 14, 2011 Share #29 Posted March 14, 2011 You are right. But, honestly, mine was so tight I did what Steve said. It's still tight enough to use without the set screw….. but, at least, I can get it off! Some variances in tolerances I do believe.
epand56 Posted March 14, 2011 Share #30 Posted March 14, 2011 If the EP-1 was loose it would be useless. Even being so tight I have to push it again in place sometimes after a long use of the camera.

pragmatist Posted March 30, 2012 Share #34 Posted March 30, 2012 I'm one of the lucky ones as i found my M9 ok to use without any thumbs up devices, Just have the Artisan cord around my wrist just in case but other than that find it a comfy camera to use, I must have grippy paw pads!!! So much nicer than bunging stuff on it which shouldn't really be there.
