alexanderruas Posted May 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) So - there seems to be around 4 versions of the summicron 50mm. I am not so patiently waiting for my M9 and planning my lens purchase. Probably a used one from one of the many reputable dealers here in Europe. I really think I would want a summicron that focuses down to 0.7m. Anyone out there with recommendations. I could get a new one if a used one isn't that much cheaper... What do you think? luigi bertolotti Posted May 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 3, 2010 The models focusing to 0,7 are the two last ones... with the last that has the built in hood : my opinion is that you don't go wrong looking for a GOOD used : grossly, you save 5-600 Euros about... and can be that Summicron is not your "definitive" 50... and that some day you feel the desire for 1,4... in this case, being the Cron 50 a lens which always will have a value, you'll probably find yourself in a "little loss" situation. Sounds like great advice! How do I know if the lens I am looking at is one of the last two models? thanks,
luigi bertolotti Posted May 3, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 3, 2010 Quite simple : all the serious dealers detail the CODE of the lenses they offer : the last two versions (identical lens design - hood is in practice the only difference) have these codes : "pre- last" : 11819 - 11825 (black - chrome) "last" : 11826 -11816 (black - chrome)
likalar Posted May 3, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 3, 2010 Luigi is giving good advice. I have (for 8 or 9 years) both the latest 50 Summicron with the built-in telescoping hood, and an earlier collapsible version. The collapsible will save you even more money, fits into a pocket easier, and will give very good results. But not as good as the late versions. These are fantastic lenses, and will allow you to take full advantage of the capabilities of your new camera. So sharp and excellent contrast! And, as Luigi states, the return on your money will be good if you ever sell. Larry
