azul404 Posted May 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I am an amateur photographer. I own a simple digital camera which i used for several occations such as trips, celebrations and mostly anecdotic situations that spontaneusly may appear on my way. I would like an advice on which Leica camera model could be more suitable for my purposes. As an ameteur and begginer photographer i don't a too expensive/sophisticated machine. I have found two models that i think might be suitable: -LEICA V-LUX 20 -LEICA D-LUX 4 Any advise will be most appreciated.

Digitom Posted May 2, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 2, 2010 Hi,I am an amateur photographer. When I look at what your purpose is, I tend to V-Lux 20, although I am not enthusiastic with that camera at the moment. But the wide zommrange may help you as a beginner especially if you want to take photos while travel (then you need a bigger zoom which is only small at the D-Lux 4, and also these anecdotic situation may also need some zoom (e.g. street photography) to get some distance to the photographed items/persons. The link Andy mentioned may be helpful, but also wait until there is a bigger test of that camera available, e.g. at dpreview.com. And have a look at this site: Leica D-Lux 4 Photography by Jim Radcliffe looking at the photos may increase your wish to buy a D-Lux 4, but then you need also some postprocess of the RAW-Data. By the way, before I forget: the V-Lux 20 has no RAW Data suport. So if you want to postprocess your pics later, you only have JPG. Maybe a big disadvantage. Advantage of the V-Lux may be the GPS when you travel often and you like that kind of localisation.
Rexbo47 Posted May 4, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 4, 2010 The D--Lux 4 Rocks. Can't speak to the V-Lux. Zoom to short? Get close.
Symeon Posted May 12, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 12, 2010 D Lux 4 definitely. The Summicron f2 zoom is great, much better than the vario-Elmar at f3,3. Unless of course you "must" have a long telephoto..
AlbertoDeRoma Posted May 12, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 12, 2010 Hi,I am an amateur photographer. The D-Lux 4 is the digital camera that - after many years - finally reignited my passion for photography. It can serve as a simple point-and-shoot in fully automatic mode, but it allows you a huge range of creative options as you learn more about photography. The image quality is impressive thanks to a great f/2.0 lens. It has the perfect dimensions to take anywhere. Even though I now have 4 other Leicas (I told you it reignited my passion ) I carry the D-Lux 4 everywhere all the time. I cannot speak about the V-LUX 20 with any authority since I haven't used it. The zoom is appealing, but experience with image quality from small-sensor + big zoom has been less than positive when it comes to image quality. Hope this helps.
