Dan States Posted April 29, 2010 Share #1  Posted April 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK, now that it's been on the market for more than 6 months I think it's time for Leica to start ponying up some better firmwear. I'd be interested in what other users are longing for to improve the operation of their x1.  Of course the elephant in the room is AF speed, but it's pretty likely they are already aware of that;)  What about general operational details?  Here are a few of my suggestions:  1. Get rid of the green light below the LCD when in optical viewfinder mode. I'm not too stupid to know my camera is on and the short battery life of the camera already has me paranoid without burning a little indicator light all the time.  2. Get rid of the "processing image" screen that pops when working on RAW files. It blocks the review until it's done.   3. Playback startup needs to be faster. Duh  4. More time options for auto power and LCD off mode.  5. Hold and lock on AF. It would be nice if you didn't have to refocus with each shot.  6. Fix the manual focus scale. It's totally innaccurate.   Those are some of my ideas....what are yours?  Best wishes Dan

thomsva Posted April 29, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted April 29, 2010 7. For zone focusing in manual focus it would be nice to have an optional focus lock to prevent accidental shifts of focus. When the lock is enabled (in the menu) focusing should be possible only while simultaneously pressing the focus button. Â 8. Remeber the manual focus setting when turning off-on. Â 9. Remove the macro option from the af/mf button. That way the button could work as a toggle button and be used as a focus lock in autofocus. (refering to suggestion 5 above) Â 10. Put the macro option under the delete/focus button instead. To reduce the number of alternatives the high-speed modes could be menu options instead. I could also live without "face detection" and and "11point macro" modes. Â 11. Add 1/60sec as an alternative for minimum shutter speed in auto iso. Â 12. If possible add ISO50 and ISO25. This would make it possible to use F:2.8 in bright light.
thomsva Posted April 29, 2010 Share #3 Â Posted April 29, 2010 13. Add an indicator of depth of field in the manual focus scale. Could be used in autofocus too. Â 14. Make the user select between m or ft for the manual focus scale to save space on the screen. Â 15. When the manual focus wheel has been used it's impossible to switch to autofocus. The af/mf button works to lower the mf assist screen instead. You have to wait for the af/mf assist to shut down before it's possible to switch back to af. Â 16. When mf assist is turned off only the scale shows when focusing. This is correct but the scale turns on only when shifting focus on the wheel, not when pressing delete/focus. This I think should be corrected.
Cirrus Posted April 29, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted April 29, 2010 17. Allow a one button push to switch between auto and manual focus. (This would allow using the auto focus as a rangefinder and then locking that distance in. Now it takes three pushes to go from manual to auto and four pushes to go back to manual.) thomsva Posted April 29, 2010 Share #8 Â Posted April 29, 2010 20. If possible make the saving from buffer to memory smarter and faster. The buffer can hold 6 pictures. The only way to use the whole buffer is to shoot a single series in continuous mode. In reality it might be more practical to be able to shoot 2-3 bursts of 1-3 photos instead with the least possible shutter delay. When the photos are saved from buffer to memory the camera doesn't respond.

(This would allow using the auto focus as a rangefinder and then locking that distance in. Now it takes three pushes to go from manual to auto and four pushes to go back to manual.) Yeah - merge AF and AFmacro - why do we have to choose - can't it just automatically shift mode when I'm trying to focus on something 30 - 60cm?  11. Add 1/60sec as an alternative for minimum shutter speed in auto iso. Add 1/125 too. 21. Display distance when auto focus is locked.  22. Add a metering lock so when you can take a reading off a mid grey, lock it and point elsewhere for autofocus.  23. Add more distance info to the manual focus scale - 6ft - infinity isn't a usable scale - give the user a choice between ft and metres and display more distance info using top and bottom of line. Â Â Try to shoot through a car window. AFmacro will focus on the window, AF will focus on my motif. Thats why I have to choose.

mjh Posted April 29, 2010 Share #12 Â Posted April 29, 2010 Even using spot autofocus? Spot AF restricts the AF area to a smaller angle while Macro AF restricts the autofocus in the third dimension. These are entirely different restrictions.
reginaldwatkins Posted April 30, 2010 Share #13 Â Posted April 30, 2010 24 Auto Exposure lock. I've been using the aperture dial on the top but by allowing the camera to automatically pick the aperture gives me a greater level of precision. The AE lock on the D-Lux 4 allows me to obtain images that would have other wise blown the highlights out.

jsrockit Posted May 4, 2010 Share #16 Â Posted May 4, 2010 Dear Leica, just give us the same stuff on the grd III and let's call it even. Â Like the smaller sensor, non-dedicated dials, and just as slow auto-focus?

nippa Posted May 5, 2010 Share #18 Â Posted May 5, 2010 The only things I'd like to be improved is the focusing speed and improvements to manual focusing ( fewer turns of the ring ) Oh and maybe the option to lock the shutter until auto focused. Â I think the manually-assisted electronic focus (as opposed to true manual focus) is always going to be a problem with the X1.
artyca Posted May 23, 2010 Share #20 Â Posted May 23, 2010 i'm happy if Leica came out with an immediate firmware update to rectify the slow playback speed and the slow autofocus.
