Tips on travelling to Jamaica, please

Our daughter and brand new son-in-law went to Jamaica earlier this year, just to get away from work and to enjoy each other.

They came back to the US in three days (they live in Phoenix) and have vowed never to return.

Go Figure.

Judging by RickLeica's experience - and the experience of your daughter and son-in-law and the experiences of others - it's starting to sound as if Jamaica is a violent and unsafe "feces hole."

If you can't travel freely and safely, can't take your Leica without fear of being attacked, robbed or stabbed over it - why bother going? If you can only be safe by staying on resort with your windows locked at night, why go? Traveling is supposed to be enjoyable and relaxing.

Traveling is supposed to be a learning experience and an opportunity to create memorable images and interactions with the locals, not an opportunity to be stabbed or robbed (at least that's always been my belief). There are other places to visit and photograph - life is too short for the kind of nonsense people are subjected to in Jamaica. JMHO.

A few years back, my wife and I traveled to St. Martin - I would highly recommend going. Of course, there are touristy areas where you will see alot of fellow travelers, but you can get off the beaten track and still feel safe. The scenery is beautiful and the locals are great to interact with.

We rented a car and drove all over the island, cameras out and making photographs. Not once did I feel unsafe, stalked or intimidated. I hope it's still like that because we would like to go back some day.

Most people don't travel, they go on holiday. A lot of people just want to sit by a pool and relax for a couple of weeks.

A colleague who knows we travel a great deal just gave me a book:The Lunatic Express: Discovering the World via the Most Dangerous Buses, Boats, Trains and Planes, by Carl Hoffman. If former travelers to Jamaica found it thrilling and exciting they might want to pick up a copy of this book to help decide where to visit next, and how to get there.

No member of this forum ever goes on holiday - it is always a trip. It also almost always requires a ludicrous amount of gear to ensure that no photographic possibility can be missed. Whatever happened to just going somewhere and mooching about?

Quite.

And it always requires a post that says "I am going to [insert somewhere expensive/hard to get to] in [insert exotic and expensive mode of transport]. I don't know whether to take [insert laundry list of expensive equipment] or [insert another laundry list of expensive equipment]"

Regards,

Why not just have a standard multi-purpose thread with multiple choices, e.g.?

1) I am going to a) Jamaica, B) the UK, c) hell, d) the moon

2) in a a) hydrofoil, B) handcart, c) hot air balloon, d) helicopter

3) I don't know whether to take a) three bodies and five lenses, B) five bodies and three lenses, c) laundry

4) or a) buy new gear when I'm there, B) take laundry, c) take nubile young body.

Jamaica is not the only Caribbean Island to have a violent reputation. Earlier this year the idyllic island of Antigua also reported an increase in violence and shootings. Last year a British honeymoon couple were murdered in their private hotel apartment.

I hasten to add that during my last visit in January this year, most people were very friendly and willing to be photographed although the odd tip was appreciated! However stray a few streets off the tourist trail and you suddenly want to start hiding your camera and I always get that tale, tale "creeping" of the skin at the back of your neck.....I know then that it's time to make my exit and just hope that I can! Policemen walking in two's and four's is a good warning too!

In March of this year, some cruise ship operators had ceased to put Antigua on their itinerary because of the increase in violence and murders on the island. Shame because it's a gorgeous place. As always it's a minority who spoil it for the majority of their people.
