57andrew Posted April 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I own two Leicas, a 1959 M3, which I inherited from my late father and my wife has just given me a brand new M9 for my birthday next month. I hope to learn a lot from the forum. I mainly shoot birds / wildlife so this is a big step away for me - from a 800mm f5.6 Canon to a 50mm f0.95. I have some old Leica Fotografie magazines from the early 1960s - also from my father - so I am going to start reading them again. I live in Hong Kong in a small town on the coast called Sai Kung but spent 5 years in Germany so can join any English or German thread! So, hello to all from Andrew
Advertisement Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Hi 57andrew, Take a look here Introduction - new joiner. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Peter H Posted April 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 21, 2010 Happy Birthday! You do appreciate what a lucky man you are, I hope. I can't imagine an M9 will replace your dSLR for birds and wildlife work, but you know this. Happy shooting.
57andrew Posted April 21, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted April 21, 2010 Oh I do! My only challenge so far is seeing the rangefinder patch in vertical. Its clear as anything in horizontal and I can see it in vertical if I take my glasses off - but then I can't see to focus :-( With my glasses on it disappears in vertical. I seem to recall thats why my father passed on his M3 to me and he would have been then about the age I am now.
andybarton Posted April 21, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 21, 2010 Focus horizontally and then move the camera through 90 degrees. It's much, much harder to focus holding the camera vertically. Welcome to the forum, btw.
57andrew Posted April 21, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted April 21, 2010 Thanks Andy. I thought of that but regarded it as "cheating" or more likely poor technique.
jaapv Posted April 21, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 21, 2010 Ummm... Why was this thread moved - and this one: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/123132-joining-forum.html not?
andybarton Posted April 21, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Because I haven't got round to it yet. Haven't you got root canal work to inflict on people, or something?
jaapv Posted April 21, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 21, 2010 Yep - as a matter of fact that is exactly what I am doing right now - but I have trained staff to do the footwork for me
